First, to my fellow SDMB members, I wish to apologize for not being more explicit. Some few of you will know precisely whereof I speak; to the others, I can only say that I’m constrained by my caring and respect for another member from giving details.
Now to the addressees of this thread:
How DARE you decide that everyone in the world you do not know is therefore evil? Yes, your adult daughter posts here; yes, she has met in person with some of us. Too bleeping bad!
My wife and I, who think very highly of your daughter, are a middle-aged Christian couple with an interest in seeing justice done and the truth be upheld. I know of one happily married man from Orlando, who knows her solely from her online presence, who did his level best to talk her through a strained situation by e-mail – and was rejected for his temerity in doing so. I know of one couple, no longer active members here, who stood by her through some painful times. A very good friend and co-worker, the male half of a couple expecting their first child, was ready to drive four hours to help her through another crisis. These are the “evil people” she met with, you judgmental hypocrites!
Yes, she’s naive for her age. And yes, she has been involved in some difficult relationships. Are we to blame?
We’re the people who stood by her, tried to understand what was troubling her and gave her the moral support she needed, sometimes the Dutch Uncle talks she needed, who cared about her. Never mind her physical problems – the woman who lives inside that body is the person we responded to, and gave of ourselves to help.
And you are taking offense to that? You’re trying to make her into a little girl again?
You had over two decades to raise her right. You failed. She’s the victim of your incompetence – don’t compound it by trying now to fix what you did wrong then!
So you’re going through her mail, logging onto her computer, reading her e-mail and following her Internet history? That’s called invasion of privacy. She’s an adult. And if she cared to do so, at least part of that could end you up in Federal Court on criminal charges. Personally, I hope she does – but she’s too nice a person – and too scared of you – to actually do such a thing.
There are predators, abusers, and just plain jerks around the world, on the Internet and off. In your home town, in the next town over, halfway around the world, everywhere.
And there are some pretty decent people around, too. Most of us try to be the latter. Not that you’d believe us, of course.
