Reminds me of this post
How so?
This should be your sig line: “Slavery was abolished in the 19th century and free whites and blacks have been living together in the south for many generations and mostly in harmony.”
Can you give him a break? You have to put his comments sometimes unspoken context. Everything he said was relevant and correct. When I started this thread, I expected that people would want some cites that anti-Southern bias was prevalent but no, there were plenty of ignorant and hateful volunteers that were more than willing to step up and demonstrate that it is still the most socially acceptable form of bigotry.
It is amazing how far people will go to condemn an entire region even when they are expressing positive messages. On any other topic, that would be completely unacceptable. Look inward please and treat people with the same respect that you expect to be treated.
The modern South is not some Boogie-man and it is ridiculous to think otherwise. It is more ‘progressive’ in many ways in terms of integration than places like San Francisco or Boston can ever hope to be.
No. I’m sorry. You’re just objectively and egregiously wrong to claim that it is correct that since slavery was abolished “free whites and blacks have been living together in the south for many generations and mostly in harmony.” It betrays a total ignorance of the period from 1863-1963. I was sincere in my first post in this thread suggesting you read Isabel Wilkerson’s fantastic work on the Great Migration. You will find it very balanced as it does not minimize northern racism in any way.
I would be happy to give a break to someone who says he or she misspoke, or even without retraction in the absence of actively insulting others for claimed ignorance. I see no need for going easy on someone who is behaving as Tibby is.
And, this should be your sig line: I’m a fool. Not only am I a fool, but I’m an idiot, too. Not just any idiot, mind you, I’m an idiot how can’t read and comprehend. I am an illiterate idiot fool.
I know it’s a little long for a sig line, but maybe a special dispensation can be granted to you because you are “special.”
I’m sure you have a well thought out thesis along with citations to support this proposition. I look forward to you posting it here as I’m sure you would never make a bold statement like this just because you pulled it out of your ass.
Would someone with a top 1% IQ ever do something like that? I highly doubt it.
I gave a cursory account of exactly my experience from the past almost 60 years of my existence; half in the north and half in the south. Are you charging that I’m lying?
No. I think you are deeply ignorant of history. Which is a much more charitable assessment than you likely deserve from me given your posts in this thread.
I didn’t pull it out of my ass. I live in the Boston area and have been to San Francisco many times. Day to day interactions between people of different races and backgrounds are much more fluid in the South than they are in the ‘Progressive’ cities. For one thing, many towns and cities in the South are majority black and those that aren’t still have a significant presence of blacks and, increasingly, hispanics. A true racist would go out their mind the first day because there is no way to avoid interaction with different races.
However, it is perfectly possible in the Boston area to avoid minorities and most rich people make an unspoken effort to do it quite well. There are minorities of course but they are kept tucked away in their own little areas where most affluent white people do not need to interact with them except very selectively. San Francisco real estate is so expensive that only wealthy people can live there (plus the thousands of homeless people). Northern California progressives talk a good game but the fact of the matter is that whatever they think they are doing isn’t working as well as it is in the South where people of all races and income levels can live and interact with one another daily.
And, I think you are deeply ignorant, period. And that is quite charitable on my behalf.
Let’s carry on.
So…pulled out your ass then.
Than you but your guess is incorrect yet again. I am not interested in writing a whole book shortly before bedtime but we can start the first chapter and continue on later.
Here is one good example for Boston. It is the Boston busing crisis that lasted until 1988. It was bad enough on its own but it is also just a symptom of larger social problem that still has not been resolved to this day.
So your sixty years’ worth of anecdotes are reflective of the time from the Civil War til now? Man, remember those Jim Crow times? Sure was harmonious! All the Civil Rights violence? Oh, that was all ancient history, I guess. Maybe it has been more harmonious for many generations now. And maybe it’s exactly the same, or worse, in the North and West. I don’t know. I live in the South.
You can say that you didn’t see much overt racism in the south. It seems much more insidious than overt to me. If I were black, perhaps i would notice it on a different level. Interracial dating was common, you say? Not in my area. I may see people dating occasionally, but when i was in high school, generally a white girl who dated a black guy had a pretty foul reputation as a result. I know a couple of interracial couples well enough to have talked about their experiences in the area. The white woman married to a black man still catches hell sometimes, but happily it is hard looks and stares, and not violence. The white man I know married to a black woman has never mentioned any kind of prejudice (to me anyway), but he and his wife celebrate Loving Day every year. I suspect that they are reminded in their daily lives at least once in a while that they are unusual in that regard. I know people who say things like “well, I’m not racist, but I’d kill a black boy who tried to date my daughter.” I hear rednecks saying things like that judge in Charleston: There are black people, white people, rednecks and niggers. But redneck isn’t a slur. A lot of rednecks are proud of being red around the collar. I had a well-educated and apparently quite civilized co-worker tell me if I move to Richmond, he’ll help me find a place that’s good, because a lot of neighborhoods get awfully damn “dark” after nightfall,* if you know what I mean.*
I am glad your experiences in that regard were all so good. I don’t think you are lying, but I don’t think your experiences are universal in regard to racism in the south.
You know, I must admit to growing somewhat dubious about that top 1% IQ thing. It may have been estimated using similar standards as his segregation analysis.
Meet me at the nearest testing center and bring money. I have $1000 I am willing to put for who scores higher. We can do it virtually too. You can pick the standardized test. Any of them will do.
Oh that is precious! Testing center? Virtually? Do you have any idea how IQ is measured?
Sure, to prove I’m smarter than a guy who posts stupid things on the internet, I’m going to pay $350 out of pocket for an assessment.
I think we will just have to be content with “stupid is as stupid does” as our only means of evaluation here.
I know exactly how IQ is measured. I have taken many psychometrics classes at the graduate level, been trained to administer the official tests and written about them at length on this board. I can pay your $350 fee if you are willing to make the bet but you have to pay up if you lose. That is about the going rate for a professional psychologist to administer one. We could both take official and professionally administered tests for the challenge. A cheaper way is to take the SAT, ACT or GRE (your choice). I haven’t taken any of those in a few years. They are highly correlated with individually administered IQ tests.
And tonight, on World Wide Mensa, two fierce competitors take the number two pencils for knock-down, drag out standardized testing…we have some footage of them glaring at each other at the weigh-in…
