Remember the original version of Return of the Jedi? Okay, it was the movie that ruined the franchise, but at least it had one memorable moment: Sy Snootle’s rendition of Lapti Nek. FAR better than the lame Jedi Rocks from the Special Edition. So, who wants to see Lapti Nek back in the movie? Let’s be heard!!!
Lapti Nek made me want to throw up. The song they turned it into in the Special Edition wasn’t any good, to be sure, but it was a welcome relief from having to hear Lapti Nek again. Bleah.
Lapti Nek rocked out, man.
The whole Jedi Rocks thing was an excuse for an MTV video. Pure, unadultrated commercialism. Of course, Lapti Nek was an MTV video, too, but when that one came out, I was young and naive and didn’t know about unadultrated commercialism. Plus it was a better song.
And really, kids, a production number in the bad guy’s hideout? I can see him hiring the Rebo Band for a party, or even a long term engagement, but the whole dance troupe thing? In the original edition of the movie, the main audience chamber of Jabba’s palace didn’t look big enough to accomodate a stage that size.
In other news, they also changed the music of the Ewok Celebration at the end of the movie for the Special Edition.
Now, it sounds eerily like Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man. So, I would love to cover it, ELP-style, and dub it, thus: Fanfare for the Common Ewok.
Well I, for one, don’t think Jedi ruined the franchise. That honor goes to TPM. (Midichlorians? WTF?)
I don’t recall the original music, or really the new. I know, I need to acquire copies of all and watch simultaneously. Some day when I get access to double sets of TVs and VCRs.
I’m not sure how I feel about the new ending of Jedi. On the one hand, the Ewok music was rather annoying. On the other hand, the new music just doesn’t fit - see Lando try to dance out of time. And I have a hard time buying that word of the results of the battle was spread around the galaxy instantaneously, so all the other planets could throw celebrations simultaneously. But I suppose if they have faster than light hyperspace transportation, they could have faster than hyperspace communication.
Characters in the Star Wars universe are routinely seen communicating with each other in real-time over interstellar distances. (Witness the conversations between Darth Sidious on Coruscant and Viceroy Nute Gunray on Naboo in Episode 1.)
Although, I wouldn’t think there would be much celebration on Coruscant yet, although it was probably in the Alien Sector.
I liked the new end music…and I liked Jedi Rocks…
Of course, I just adore little Max Rebo…he’s sooo cute!
As far as Jabba’s music goes, I like Jedi Rocks better (dumb name though) the horn line is damned catchy.
I also prefer the celebration music at the end of Jedi Special Edition MUCH better than the singing Ewoks! Did anyone else notice that with the singing Ewok music, Lando’s clapping was completely off rhythm? The new music fixed that…
And it doesn’t sound like they’re singing “Smells of cereal!”
Teehee!
Here is my (truly fanatic) way of looking at it:
The Ewok music WAS being played, and that’s what they are dancing to at the celebration. However, the NEW music is sort of like a background noise, or orchestral piece that WE hear, and not them…
And, strangely, that’s how it really is…
