You goat-felching asshats! Way to fucking welcome eager newbies to the Og-damn band! I’ll play your little fucking game, and try to fade into the background, but with a post like that, I have a strong suspicion you’ve got some special brand of shit set out for me. Holy fucking shit, and I’m going to be spending all semester taking shit from you.
Background: the drumline of the band has a message board. I’m the only “freshman” (band-wise, not academic year) who’s posted, so this shit is obviously directed at me.
If you didn’t want freshmen on your boards asking you questions, then perhaps the whole fucking site should be password only EH?
Looking at the other threads, do you really expect them to be able to answer your questions?
Let’s see: I see a thread about bestiality, I see a thread where someone expresses their enthusiasm for homosexual relations, and I see the same four silly names over and over.
If you want it cleaned up, send an email to the Webmaster of the forum. The address is provided under the “contact” section. Offer to clean up the board yourself because, if the Webmaster takes you up on your offer, you’ll at least be an incoming freshman with some clout.
This is not the first time I’ve seen such arrogance, hostility, and general ignorance from an amateur snare drummer (or quad player or what-have-you). I know it’s not true of everyone, but I have yet to see the opposite, at least in person.
Most pro drummers act nothing like this, as you may be aware. What keeps you on the drumline, anyway? I’d be distracted from the actual purpose of being there if I had to insult my intelligence with this garbage.
Joe: as yet, I know only two instruments- piano and cello. Ergo, if I wish to join the band, I must resign myself to either cymbals or silks… and silks get no helmet (and wear skirts instead of pants). You see, I will just be joining for the first time, so despite being in the last year of school, I am considered a freshman for band purposes.
Silks are supposed to be nicer, but fer crying out loud, it’s not an instrument, it’s a friggin flag! (Drill team that gets to pretend it’s band)
Surprisingly, Antimanics post gave me more comfort than any of my friends have been able to do via IM. Prolly because, as you point out, there’s only 4-6 of them to worry about.
Damn, they cross me as the high school kids who couldn’t make it on the football team and started on the band and now feel the need to take out all of their pent up hostilities on newbies. Bullies really do exist in all groups.
Sad.
[sub]I know you’re in college, that just explains the overboard hostilities of the older band members. They’ve had it pent up inside ever since high school…[/sub]
Shoulda picked silks, sweetheart. I spent 1 year in HS guard and 2 in college guard, and with the exception of one or two bitches, the people were wonderful and the experience was excellent. Maybe to you it’s a “friggin flag,” but to a spinner, it is an instrument, though its output is visual instead of auditory. It’s a tool for translating the music into motion, color, and expressing what’s behind all the tooting. A lot of effort and talent is necessary to wield that “friggin flag” effectively. I am a voice major, and music is my life, but in a marching band, I would rather spin than play an instrument any day. It is by no means an easy task, and guard members work equally as hard and on occasions harder than the rest of the band members. And we’re nicer people. Not to generalize, because I have met some very nice percussionists, but a whole lot of drummers are real pricks. Sorry you’re having trouble with them, they do appear to be complete dumbasses, and good luck, but don’t be ripping on silks when you’ve never been a part of them.
I spent eight years in marching band, high school and college, and I came to the conclusion that drummers are not the most arrogant pricks in the band. That honor lies with the trumpet players. You know, the assholes who think they’re God’s gift to the band, the ones who don’t think they need to follow the printed music and instead play 2 octaves above their written notes, and the ones who think that the drum major is talking to everyone but them.
I liked our college drummers - they were good guys (and they were the ones who brought us booze on the band buses) - and our high school drumline, while they had an attitude, were nowhere near the trouble that the trumpets were, mainly because of their captain who took no shit (I was drum major when I was a senior). Looks to me like you just stumbled in somewhere at the wrong time (although yeah, they do look like assholes). You probably should play it cool - fade into the background as much as possible for the first few weeks so that you don’t get the brunt of their hazing (and no, I’m not defending it - I think it’s bullshit). And since you’re a girl, perhaps they’ll go a little easier on you.
Good luck. I really enjoyed band - it was worth it just for the trips and my friends.

Well, being one of two people from an audition of 17 who was summarily rejected by the drumline (or rather, politely offered a position as prop crew), I am now a silk. Yes, they are nicer, but I had just spent 4 hours making friends with 4 of the newbie drumline folks I don’t really feel a connection with the silks girls, but I suppose I’ll get used to it.
Damn, now I have to wear a skirt and don’t get a helmet.
Is drumming something you would like to take up? By all means, don’t let this unfortunate event discourage you. It’s as easy as getting a good practice pad, good sticks, and listening/watching.
“do not even presume to call or treat us as friends or equals.”
Geesh, what a bunch of jerks. Sorry you have to deal with them. Don’t you be like that when you’re not a freshman!
I couldn’t see any but 4 posts from the link you posted, but I did look at some of their other threads (I’m on a semi-remote job and we only have dial-up waaaah :D).
Anyway, from their other threads, they look like only a few steps above the “dUUd3 ur so kewl” type crap you see on teen boards.
Don’t let those spoiled little “hipper than thou” brats discourage you!!!
