The part about innocent civilians being a target is a sore spot with me. One that would garner a punch in the face to anyone who spoke those words to my face.
I saw that photograph, and was honestly more pissed at the navy for letting that get out. Censors should have been ALL over that.
However, I agree with Saepiroth’s opinion. That may well be the harshest thing the person who wrote it knew to say. It might have just been mean-spirited. Still, the fact is, those guys are working their asses off, in a hostile environment that could potentially kill them. I’m willing to cut them a little slack.

Hey Otto, I am a “fag” and I still think you’re an asshole.
I’ll send a letter to the CNO asking directly how, if at all, the Sailor who violated the Navy regulations (one: against writing ANY grafitti (sp?) on the bomb; two: uisng the prejudicial term in question) was disciplined. I’ll be sure to include the appropriate quotes from the regs & the UCMJ to save the CNO’s staff some legwork.
I’ll post here both my letter (after I get back from class today) and the response, if any.
And just to make the whole thing more interactive, I’ll send it via accountable mail and post the tracer number here. That way all of us, if so inclined, can find out when and to whom my letter is delivered.

Otto does have a point here. There’a rush to say “cut them some slack” for the comment, but if it had used a racial epithet in place of “Fag,” I sincerely doubt the defense would be as enthusiastic. In fact, I’m quite certain it would be more along the lines of “it’s indefefensible for that guy to have written that, but he’s only one guy.”

FWIW, the increasing amount of minorities in the US military make such an act very dangerous to contemplate. It’s a long swim home if you get “accidentally” pitched off a flight deck.
