Today I surprise my nephew

Today is the first full day of the kids’ spring vacation. My older niece and nephew are staying with their grandparents and then they’ll be spending some time with their aunt. My younger nephew, JD, is stuck at home because he’s not related to that family and it would never occur to them to invite him too.

So, today, he and I are going to Echo Lake Aquarium. He is a huge fan of reptiles of all kinds. There’s supposed to be a great frog exhibit there. There’s also an exhibit on bloodsuckers. He’s gonna love this!

I’m not going to tell him what we’re doing. I’m just going to tell him we have some errands to run. His first surprise will be when we take the ferry from Plattsburgh to Vermont. That will be a treat for him. I don’t think he’s ever taken the ferry before. I hope there are still some ice floes in the lake, but I doubt it. It’s been kind of warm.

I can’t wait!!! I’m so excited. I’ve wanted to go to Echo ever since I heard about it a few months ago. I just e-mailed my sister to make sure it was ok if I took her son across state lines. She was thrilled. She said she’s jealous and wants to go too but she’s stuck at work.

I’ll post pictures later.

You are going to be one popular uncle! Hope you both have a fantastic time!

Have a great time and lots of pictures!

They do sex changes at the Aquarium?

Thanks guys! I’m getting more and more excited. I’m not a patient person. Echo doesn’t open until 10:00. I’ve been looking forward to this ever since I left for work last night. Argh! The anticipation is overwhelming.
Does this make me sound as nerdy as I think it does?

Doh! :smack:

Apologies, congodwarf.

Hehehehe. No problem. Believe me, you’re not the first to do that.

But think how cool if they did. It would change the entire meaning of the word, “outing”.

<shudders at the thought of snakes> Enjoy yourselves immensely. How old is your nephew?

Aww! I don’t suppose you’d come to Minnesota and take me to the Science Museum, eh?

Nah, didn’t think so. Still, you’re a rare great auntie. Have a wonderful time, and don’t forget the ice cream.

That is a wonderful, kind thing to do. With the added bonus of being hecks fun! Can’t wait for the pictures.

Go, congodrawf.

I’m sad that the family didn’t think to include him (What, are they “slow”?), but having a fun Aunt who likes you will certainly be good for your nephew!

Well, we’re back. That was fun. It wasn’t an aquarium like I was expecting. My only prior experience is the one in Boston. This one had no massive tank filled with sharks and stuff. There were a bunch of smaller tanks and just about all the fish, turtles, frogs, etc., were of the variety found in and around Lake Champlain. Still it was quite cool. I didn’t take a huge amount of pictures because I forgot I had the camera. 'Cause I’m a dork. And, my nephew has this strange ability to make a picture go blurry, without any visible movement. But, I’m about to upload them to photobucket. As soon as I figure out why the computer isn’t recognizing the camera.

As for the family not inviting him, they’re not his family. My sister is not married to her guy. The other two kids are his from a previous marriage. The family they’re visiting are the parents and sister of the other kids’ mother. So, it’s not like my future brother-in-law’s parents and sister are alienating his future step-son. It’s his own ex-inlaws. So, I can kinda understand. Besides, it worked out for the best anyway. My nephew JD and the other boy just don’t really get along and it’s always nice when they get a break from each other. The only problem is that since most of my family doesn’t live here, is too old to deal with him, or is disabled, he doesn’t have anywhere to go and ends up feeling left out.

But, I think we got that covered today.

First, I took him to Dunkin Donuts. He loves the bacon, egg and cheese bagels. He never gets to have them. So, he got one. And a smoothie.
Then, we took the ferry to Vermont. He totally enjoyed that. Then, we went to Echo. He was so excited when he realized that’s where we were going. We spent 3 hours there. It is actually fairly small. His favorite part was the cool green screen thing which allows the kids to make their own weather report. I bought the DVD. I’m hoping I can upload it to show you guys. He’s such a nutball. In the gift shop, I got him a squishy lizard and a black bracelet with his initials and a lizard (no, it’s not a girly bracelet).
Then, for some odd reason, he wanted to go to the Burlington Mall. He wanted to see if it was bigger than the one in Plattsburgh. So, we walked the mall and decided that it’s just about as lame as our own mall. There was a toy and hobby shop there and I got him a set of old fashioned plastic army guys. Then, we went to Williston because they have a Longhorn restaurant and I’ve been craving a Renegade ever since I left Massachusetts.
Then, we drove around the shopping plaza in Williston in an attempt to find something fun to do but we failed miserably so we headed back to the ferry. On the return trip, he was able to use one of those view finder thingies and he really enjoyed that. I also let him use the camera a bit. Then we went to pick up my new work boots and he got to play in this strange car they had in the showroom.
Unfortunately, we live in Plattsburgh and there’s absolutely nothing fun to do here unless you’re looking to get drunk, stoned or tattooed. I am looking to get tattooed but that’s on the 22nd so we had to pass on that for now.

We’re home now (obviously) and he’s playing with his army guys. I think he’s tired. I know I am. I worked last night. I haven’t slept yet.

I had a ball. Man that kid can talk. He talked non-stop from the time we left home until we left the mall.

He’ll be 10 next month.

K, here are the pictures. Unfortunately, I can’t get the video of the weather report. I’ll keep trying. It’s wicked funny.
