Today was National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day

And I didn’t know that until just now, way past dinnertime here, so I plan on celebrating tomorrow.

I will go to the local co-op and pick up some of their house-made white bread (which they call Wonderful Bread) and some of their imported cheddar. I will add a couple slices of bacon to the husband’s sandwiches and a few slices of crisp apple (probably Cripps Pink) to mine. I will slather the outsides with real butter and pan fry until just browned, and then bake in the oven to make sure the cheese is melted through.

They will be served with more apple slices and pickles - dill for the man, and cornichons for me. A crisp white wine will probably pair well.

What’s your favorite grilled cheese, and what (if anything) do you pair it with?

How the hell did I not know this?

:smack:

I go for the classic: good whole wheat bread, extra sharp cheddar and maybe some ham. Nothing sweet. American cheese is acceptable in a pinch as is gruyere. The sandwich may be cut up into slices and dipped in tomato sauce or soup if desired.

I had one today! The fine folks at my lunch spot make me a custom grilled cheese sammich: American & Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato and grilled mushrooms on whole wheat bread.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Where’s the “that was delicious” smiley?

I had a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch today. It was … okay.

I had an interesting one on Friday. Food truck parked by an outdoor bar (which by the way is the greatest thing ever, basically a riverside park plus beer) sold something called “The Popper.” It was grilled jalapenos, cream cheese, pimiento cheese, and bacon. Yum!

If it was just OK, you’re doing it wrong!

We have a grilled cheese food truck here too, that makes the rounds of the local bars. I am going to have to check this out …

But the Chosen Grilled Cheese got Jesus!

Grill me … a … cheese.

This is kind of funny… this morning I thought I’d make breakfast. Eggs and bacon seemed like a lot of work, so I thought I’d just do toast, which seemed boring. It’s been weeks since I did a grilled cheese, so I decided to go that route even if it wasn’t lunch time.

So there you go…

(In a random reference to certain other threads, is this chain of events anything like unawarely worshiping the sun?)

We always observe this as our civic duty. We had a local cheddar and fontina on sourdough, with cream of tomato soup.

Grilled cheese sandwich? You call that a sandwich? A sandwich has meat! And two slices of bread! Cheese is a condiment!

! and !

There’s always the French version.

Weird…I had no idea, but I had the strongest craving for grilled cheese last night.

It was hella good, too. A slice of mild cheddar, then a couple very thin slices of smoked deli ham, and then the dregs of a bag of shredded mozzarella on the other side.

Wait, you make grilled cheese with one slice of bread? How the heck does that work?

Multigrain bread, Havarti, caramelized onions and mushrooms were on the menu Saturday.

That was a good sandwhich!

A grilled ham and cheese is a fine sandwich, but it ain’t a grilled cheese.

Fair enough. I made another grilled cheese this evening.

I’ve been doing grilled cheese wrong this whole time. I always spread butter on the bread and then put it in the pan. Wrong.

Better way to do it, which I have recently discovered, is to melt butter in the pan and dredge the bread in melted butter. Then add cheese and throw in to the pan.

I have no idea why that works better, but it’s so much more crispy and doesn’t seem to leave the middle soggy in the least.

Dangit, I only opened this thread because my wife and I had a grilled cheese sandwich today at lunch.

It should have been locked at midnight.

Is there a sandwich for today, nationally speaking?

I believe today’s sammich is haggis on rye bread with vegemite. Cite.
