What gets me is that this YouTube video says “comments are disabled.” That tells me that there’s already been enough nasty comments and arguments that they’ve had to disable the comments.
I read a lot of Langston’s poems in my school textbooks, and always liked their wit and warmth. I also love his short story “Thank You, Ma’am,” about a young boy who tries to rob a widow and ends up getting what he didn’t expect out of it–kindness. (Not that said widow doesn’t give him a piece of her mind as well.)
And, of course, there’s what’s probably his most famous poem “A Dream Deferred.” That helped to inspire (and give the title to) the play A Raisin In The Sun.
I’d be willing to bet that the comments were never turned on for it so no one ever had a chance to leave a nasty comment. Not that after a few hours a Google employee took a look and decided to turn them off and hide them, amazed at the horrible things that people would write.
I just saw this not 5 minutes ago! When TCM had interesting little things in between movies, one hot summer they had a segment with a Langston Hughes poem. (They got rid of all of that, they did save the film noir-ish bit for in the middle of the night.) I think it aired during the summer, not February (black history month).
If there were nasty comments, I would assume they’d be the ones I’ve seen on Reddit, that Google were being dicks for putting him up instead of the Super Bowl, after having put one up for other (admittedly bigger) big sports events.
