Engage in international espionage, including against the US? Check, and arguably Russia is more overt in this
Aggressively threatening neighbours? Well with China it’s mostly a looming threat, whereas Russia has actually invaded its neighbour plus projected power in Georgia, Syria etc. Nonetheless American conservatives trivially handwave the latter and only seem to care about the former.
Communist? Nope. In practice they are both pretty Capitalist countries, certainly in the Chinese cities, perhaps rural China is still largely run on communist principles.
Strongman leader? Yep, although I’m glad Xi has never rode topless on a horse.
Repression of minorities? Check
(Fair) elections, freedom of speech? Haha, nah bro

I think the main difference is,
Growing economic powerhouse that is potentially threatening US economic dominance of the world.
China: Yes Russia: No
Human rights schmooman rights. Its all about the money.
China: Non-white, and officially Communist. Therefore, pure evil and deserving of genocide.
Russia: White, Christian, and fascist. Therefore, a force of truth and justice who deserve to commit genocide as they please.
Try calling Russians fascists and see their response.
Of course, they define “fascist” as “opposes Russia”; they don’t even teach about the Holocaust in their schools. The Nazis were bad in their eyes for being on the other side as Russia, and for no other reason.
Ironically, the USSR, which Putin is trying to bring back, persecuted Christians for over 70 years (as they did anyone with religious beliefs whatsoever, as the government didn’t want to cede any authority to any church or deity).
It’s more that Communism is an exclusionist religion that refuses to call itself that, and was persecuting the competition just as Christianity did before and after it.
