Token chinese

Hong Kong is not and was not part of the EU.

Yes it was british until 1997, and was supposed to be autonomous for 50 years after that. China invaded hong kong right then, and made it a puppet state of china. Point being, the EU membership was supposed to continue.

I KNOW what was in my sister in laws passport “EU member” whatever you say… (Before Brexit)

Loggins is completely full of shit.

Rights as a British overseas citizen

You can:

  • hold a British passport
  • get consular assistance and protection from UK diplomatic posts

Unless you’re also a British citizen:

  • you’re still subject to immigration controls - you do not have the automatic right to live or work in the UK
  • you are not considered a UK national by the European Union (EU)

(Bolding mine.)

Being a citizen of Hong Kong made someone a British “overseas citizen” which the EU does not recognize.

That was largely due to decisions the UK made in regards to how it wanted to accept people who lived in its overseas territories. More info can be read here:

She did hold a EU citizenship until brexit. Thats how it was.

Perhaps split this into another thread?

Either she became a British citizen through a path other than only being a Hong Kong resident or you’re wrong.

“Trust me bro” is not a valid citation.

This thread is the Loggins Pit thread and it belongs nowhere else.

Please explain how Brexit has any effect on a region of the People’s Republic of China.

Only Hollywood propagandists have convinced you that Hong Kong is a region of China and not a shining outpost of the glorious British Empire!

You seriously have no idea what you’re talking about. Hong Kong is still a Special Admnistrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. It is not a puppet state. China did not invade Hong Kong in 1997 or any other date. And the Sino-British Joint Declaration does not state what you think it does.

That’s just what the Chinese - sorry, chinese enemies attacking us through Hollywood want you to think. Source for China invading Hong Kong in 1997 - trust me bro.

Trust yo’ bro? I don’t even know 'im!

I was in HK a month ago, and noticed several police wanted posters, and in all cases, 100%, the crimes that the person was wanted for, was campaigning or disseminating information about political independence.

The 1997 treaty was not ideal, but it’s already been broken, decades before it was meant to expire. In fact, I think China has officially said that the treaty is void some years ago, before imposing the new “security” laws.

Is this supposed to contradict something Monty said?

Because “China-PRC is bad” is not an intellectual blank check.

Yes. I’m replying to the post suggesting that HK remains a special administrative region under the 97 treaty. Since China has publicly, repeatedly, broken the terms of that treaty and has overtly said they don’t consider it to be in force any more, I think, at best, that claim needs to come with a big asterisk.

Meanwhile, if you’re trying to suggest that this is coming from a generic animosity towards China, as is the current fashion of the time, take a look at some of my past posts. I am one of the most frequent defenders of China on this forum…I wouldn’t like to consider myself as some kind of promoter of China though, I just try to bring balance (to the force).

True. My apologies.

No problem

The vast majority of the residents of Russia, Iran, and North Korea are not our enemies either.

China invaded Hong Kong?

That seems kind of pointless after the British negotiated a handover.

The alternate timeline that Loggins is posting from is indeed fascinating.
