Tolkien trivia contest

Express train, although I’ll bet somewhere in HOMES an early draft mentions the Mordor Freight Train Co.

Elanor, sunstar was the beautiful flower of Lorien, and Sam’s first born daughter. Frodo suggested the name after Sam was slightly at loss with his first born being female.

October 24.

  1. What was the name of the land that later became Rohan?
  2. Where did the Elves wake up?
  1. Calenardhon, a province of Gondor depopulated by the Plague.
  2. Cuivienen
  1. What is the name of the land where Men awoke?

That’s half an answer, being where she got her first name. The last name assumed by her and her descendants was “Fairbairn”, since she had blond hair, which is very uncommon among Hobbits.

Except that year when an abnormal number of hobbits had Blond hair.

I had to look it up so this doesn’t really count in the rules: Dat would be Dis.

Answered

  1. Who were sent to the Ship of Long Foam? & 103. What was their mission?
102 & 103. Cair Andros is the “ship of long foam” so Aragorn sent the men too afraid to approach the gates of Mordor to free it. (What Exit?)

  2. What were Samwise and Hamfast Gamgee’s actual full names?
Banazir (halfwise) and Ranagud (stay at home) Galpsi (also written as Galbasi elsewhere by JRRT). (Qadgop answers own question)

  3. When the Goblins assaulted Father Christmas’ house who crushed and squeezed the goblins?
It was the Polar Bear. (What Exit? answers own question)

  4. Who was the first person Tuor and Voronwe met when the reached the borders of Gondolin? (The whole valley, not just the city.)
Turin if we’re talking about just outside the Encircling Mountains (Grey)
Ecthelion at the gates in the tunnel (Grey)

  5. Who said “Oh no, not another fucking elf!” when Tolkien read his work to the Inklings?
Hugo Dyson (who had an uncredited role in the movie Darling). (rowrrbazzle)

  6. What color was Gandalf the Grey’s Hat?
Blue, wasn’t it? (Qadgop the Mercotan)

  7. What was the name of the very-well-hidden elf city carved out of the mountain, and who were its rulers? For bonus points, name the mountain and the nearby river.
Nargothrond? Except there’s no mountain…it IS underground but carved into a hill. The river would be the Sirion in that case. (jayjay)
It could also be Gondolin, which wasn’t actually carved out of a mountain but built in a vast caldera, the rim mountains of which were called the Echorriath. Again, the nearby river would be the Sirion. (jayjay)
I see that someone named the city, but not its rulers. The first and the founder was Finrod Felagund and after his death the crown passed to his nephew, Orodreth (not his brother , as it was written in the Silmarillion). (Arien)

  8. Where and how did Feanor get his ships? (that lazy bastidge)
He stole them from the Teleri (sea-elves) at Alqualonde (Swanhaven), in the First Kinslaying of the Elves (source of much strife and turmoil in times to come). (Chronos)

  9. Perhaps this gives away 200, but related to that – why did Sindarin gain prominence over Quenya in most Middle Earth elf-settlements?
Thingol (alias Elwe, twin brother of Olwe, king of the Teleri in Valinor) forbade the use of Quenya (which the Noldor spoke) in Doriath after learning of the Kinslaying at Alqualonde. (jayjay)
Expanding on Sindar over Quenya, keep in mind that Elu Thingol was the only Calaquendi (elf of the light) in middle-earth for many many years, before the Noldor in revolt showed up. Thingol ruled widely over a large area, and while not the titular leader of all elves in Beleriand, was certainly deferred to, and considered first among equals by the likes of Cirdan and other Sindarin rulers, along with being deferred to by the Sylvan elves who wandered in later. (Qadgop the Mercotan)

  10. Who was Eorl the Young’s father?
Léod from the North. (What Exit?)

  11. Who did Eorl the Young swear his oath to?
    Cirion (5 time champ)

  12. Who was the first Steward of Gondor?
I know that Hurin (not the same as the father of Turin) founded the line of Stewards where that position was hereditary, but I don’t know if he was the first Steward or not. (Arien)

  13. What happened to the first Minas Tirith (of the first age) and what was it renamed?
It was the name for the tower on Tol Sirion, the island in the Sirion at the pass where the river entered Beleriand proper from Ard Galen. Sauron captured it for Morgoth and the island as a whole was renamed Tol-in-Gaurhoth (Island of Werewolves). (jayjay)

  14. Who is the only named dwarf woman in Tolkien’s works?
But I know that Dis is the only named dwarf woman. (Little Plastic Ninja)
She was the mother of Fili and Kili. (Chronos)

  15. What is another name for Eregion? For bonus points, in what other fantasy work did the name Eregion appear? Hint – notice I said “fantasy work”, not “novel”.
    Hollin (jayjay)
    Star Wars (Ivorybill)

  16. What happened to Elrond’s parents?
His father, Earendil, went sailing to Valinor to beg the Valar for aid against Morgoth. While he was at sea, the sons of Feanor attacked to get the Silmaril that his mother, Elwing, had inherited as Dior’s daughter. Elwing leapt into the sea with the Silmaril around her neck and was transformed into a seagull so she could fly to Earendil with it. Tying the jewel to his forehead, he pierced the Islands of Enchantment and reached Valinor, precipitating the War of Wrath, the final banishment of Morgoth, and the Drowning of Beleriand. Elrond and his brother Elros were captured by the sons of Feanor but were released by a guilt-stricken Maglor. (jayjay)

  17. What was the name of the first queen of Numenor’s mother, and what protofeminist advice did she give her daughter?
Wasn’t it Erendis? And didn’t she tell her daughter not to trust men? (Qadgop the Mercotan)

  18. What month and day of the year does Frodo regain consciousness in Rivendell and have his conversation with Gandalf?
    October 24. (Arien)

  19. Post-War of the Ring, what is New Year’s Day in Gondor?
New Year’s Day was celebrated on the day the ring was destroyed and Sauron fell; I think that’s March 25, which is also celebrated as Tolkien Reading Day around the world. (well he’s back)

Southlinch or South Linch, “Though I’m all for Bree in most things.” (Ivorybill)

  25. What anachronism described Gandalf’s fireworks?
Express train, although I’ll bet somewhere in HOMES an early draft mentions the Mordor Freight Train Co. (5 time champ)

  26. How did Sam’s daughter get her name?
Elanor, sunstar was the beautiful flower of Lorien, and Sam’s first born daughter. Frodo suggested the name after Sam was slightly at loss with his first born being female. (5 time champ)

Is this thread dead? If so, it was fun while it lasted. If I were less lazy, I’d go back and calculate who answered the most questions.

Add a question and see if it comes back to life. It might just be resting.

Wonderful bird, the Lindon Blue. Lovely plumage!

Your wish, is to me a command.
