Chronos, he didn’t giver her the spoons on his birthday! That occured later, as his belongings were being divided up!

When Bilbo disappeared in 2941 and didn’t return for over a year, the Sackville-Bagginses thought that day had finally come. They were measuring the rooms of Bag End when Bilbo returned without warning. The Sackville-Bagginses were sorely disappointed, and as they left Lobelia appropriated several of Bilbo’s spoons.

The Sackville-Bagginses’ hopes were once again dashed when Bilbo adopted his cousin Frodo Baggins as his heir around 2989 and invited him to live at Bag End. When Bilbo left the Shire in 3001, Lobelia was angered to discover that she had only been left a set of spoons and tried to sneak several other valuable items out of Bag End in her umbrella. As Frodo escorted her off the premises, Lobelia said:

So not a Birthday Present indeed but with the gifts from his departure.
Chronos and I both misremembered.

Jim {This is why you are the acknowledged Middle-Earth Lore Master of the SDMB}

I can name 8 of the 2.

[6] The Lake men were mentioned as using archery as a sport.
[7] The Wood Elves enjoyed sport hunting.
[8] Golf has already ben mentioned.
Yes, I know we were supposed to do this from memory but the fact that I could remember 6 of those made me realise the question is flawed.

You got 7 of 2. Shooting at the wand is archery, and I already said archery. And golf. So there. Nyah.

As we’re short on questions:
21) What was the name of the #2 Ringwraith?
22) Name 2 petty Dwarves
23) How many children did Aragon & Arwen have?

Please remember, from memory, don’t look these up.

Goodnight,
Jim

  1. Khamul
  2. Mim and Khim (and Ibun)
  3. At least 3, 1 son and “daughters”.

Too Quick, give us some questions please and 23) is more than 3. I leave it for someone else.
On 21 I was looking for the name he shared with a very important Balrog, but you are correct of course.

Jim

OK, I stand properly chastized on both the spoons and the sports. But I am at least glad that one of the sports I was thinking of was sufficently obscure that it’s still evaded the other nerds: I was thinking of the rock-throwing by the stone giants.

Can’t! Daughter needs the computer. Later!

looking forward to your demonstrating that there were more than 2 daughters.

  1. How was Cirdan the Shipwright unique among Elves?
    He had a beard.

  2. What was Aragorn’s sword called before its reforging?
    Narsil.

  3. What was it called after it was reforged?
    Anduril, Flame of the West

  4. The wine over-enjoyed by the Elves in “The Hobbit” was from where?
    Don’t remember.

  5. Whose giant statues did the Fellowship pass between on the river?
Isildur and someone else Idon’t remember.

  1. What are the only two sports mentioned in The Hobbit?
    Golf and I don’t remember.

  2. What does “Baruk” mean, and in what language?
    Don’t know.

  3. What did Bilbo give to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins on the occasion of his eleventy-first birthday?
Spoons, because he suspected she’d stolen some of his when she lived in Bag End befor ehe got Back Again (Hobbit).

I want to participate but the only question that hasn’t been answered yet (the “baruk” one) is one I don’t know. So I’m going to add my input on the “How many children did Arwen and Aragorn have?” question and say that they have one son, Eldarion, and “many daughters” according to one of the appendices. (Appendix A?)

  1. What was the color of Thorin Oakenshield’s hood in the Hobbit and what else was special about it?
  2. Who was the first elf to love a mortal?
  3. What was Celeborn’s, rather humorous to us, name in Quenya?

Was that Idril? I remember that there was an elf-maid who loved Turin (aka Mormendil aka Turambar aka a lot of other names), and it would have been a lot better had he married her. But I can’t be sure I remember the lass’s name.

The “Baruk” question, incidentally, was answered already.

It was sky-blue. I believe it had a silver tassel.

Ah, I must have missed the answer to the “baruk” question then. I googled it though.

And no, it’s not Idril, or Finduilas who was the elf-woman who fell in love with Turin when he was in Nargothrond.

Yup, bmoak, it was sky blue with a silver tassel. Your turn to ask a question.

Looks like we’re up to #24

  1. Who was Cirdan’s representative at the Council of Rivendell?

Teleporno.

OK, Miss Sunshine, I must admit that you have me completely stumped and befuzzled, then. I’m certain that, in the canonical storyline at least, Beren and Luthien were the first pairing of Elf and Mortal, and I’m pretty sure that Turin and Finduilas (thank you for that name, that was driving me crazy) were before them. Of course, one can make a fair case that Luthien was not exactly an Elf, being half-Maia.

Wasn’t Lobelia’s present an umbrella stand for all the umbrellas she had “borrowed” and never returned? Somebody got an umbrella stand…

I’m afraid my trivia is not comprehensive enough to pose a question of my own…

Grim

Eek, I can’t even look for it until tonight. Their was a tiny snippet that gave the impression of more than 2 daughters.

Last night I did break out letters to look for something I vaguely remembered about Galadriel.
From pg 180 Letters and Transcribe by hand, and then typed in this morning, hopefully I got correct.

Doesn’t prove a thing but Galadriel is probably older than Celeborn.
