- Wasn’t it Fingolfin, who, upon looking at the folk of Beor, found his heart turned towards love for these new beings?
That quote just shows how confused the “canon” is about Galadriel, since it was also oft stated of how she was born in Valinor. A pity JRRT never got it really hammered out.
But making her one of the Cuivienen-awakened ones would have necessitated major re-writing of the genealogies. Instead of finwë’s granddaughter, she’d have been his sister (or something).
No the quote says Eldamar, that was in **Aman ** with the capitol? of Tirion.
The ‘awoke’ I assume was in this case a euphemism for Born.
I was using the quote to demonstrate that Tolkien saw a great age for Galadriel. Unfortunately in one draft Celeborn could have been born before the March to the West but Christopher thought this the unlikeliest origin.
Jim {Need my books, when can we buy all the books digitized and searchable?}
You just defined my new “sell the house and all assets to buy” dream item…
To add to the sports “controversy”, in The Hobbit, when the giants are rock-throwing, doesn’t Thorin mention being “picked up and kicked sky high for a football” or something similar? That would imply that soccer or a variant was known.
What was the name you were looking for on #2 Naz? The only Balrog I can think of is Gothmog…
This is probably very easy but…
25) Who slew Gothmog, Captain of the Balrogs?
- How many Silmarils were made and what happened to each (just the final resting place so to speak)?
(Disclaimer: My knowledge of JRRT is rather limited in comparison to the posts above, and I don’t know all of the answer, but pretty sure you lot do. Genuinely interested to find a quick sum up of these, but won’t google as per rule no 1)
Yes, I was looking for Gothmog and Ecthalion slew the Balrog of the same name I believe. Gothmog was a Captain of Melkor, leader of the Balrogs and considered as important as Sauron.
3 Silmarils: One is on Earendil’s ship lighting the night sky as a bright star.
One was lost in the sea and one was lost in a Volcano I think. These last two were stolen by the Last two of Feanor’s Sons. Probably Maedros and Maglin.
I am not positive on that part by no means however.
Jim
That was Finrod, not Fingolfin. Qadgop the Mercotan, I am disappointed in you! Also I meant “love” as in romantic love, although I realize now that my question was a little ambigious. (Hint: It’s in one of those History of Middle Earth books.)
You were right about what happened to the Silmarils, What Exit?, except the second of Feanor’s sons was Maglor not Maeglin, who’s the guy who betrayed Gondolin to Morgoth.
This isn’t a trivia question, but just how do you pronounce Maedhros anyway?
You are going to love this sight:
http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.asp?url=http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/m/maedhros.html
Dates: Born in Valinor during the Years of the Trees, died c. I 583
Race: Elves
Division: Noldor
Family: House of Fëanor
Titles: The Tall
Meaning: 'Glitter of Metal’1
Pronunciation: My’thros (‘th’ as in English ‘these’)
Didn’t the unconsumated relationship between what’s his name, the Male elf , and what’s her name, the female human (of Haleth’s people?) happen after Beren & Luthien tho?
Doing this from memory is hard!
I have a theory about this. I believe that ‘Moria’ originally had more pleasant connotations : something like ‘shaded shelter’. However, after the Doors were Shut and Khazad-Dum was now a place of evil, the words acquired more nasty associations, until by the late 3rd age, the best translation was ‘black pit’.
What Exit?, please, no looking stuff up!!! This has to all be from memory. (But yeah, the Encyclopedia of Arda is a pretty cool website).
- What is the name of Ghan-buri-Ghan’s people?
- Where is Boromir killed?
- What title is bestowed upon Faramir after the War of the Ring?
- Where was Boromir and Faramir’s mother from?
He said it wasn’t a trivia question, he just wanted to know. Sorry.
27. Drunadain
28. Can’t do from memory, someone else take this one.
29. Prince of Ithilien
30. Dol Amroth
BTW: Thank you for starting this thread. I am really enjoying it.
- Name Bilbo’s Parents
- Name Frodo’s Parent
- Name Eleanor Fairbairn’s Parents
Yeah, I gotta read for context. :smack:
I didn’t check in the books for answers. I checked to make sure I asked the right question. Which I didn’t.
Hey, I’m female. If you were a real Tolkien trivia master (a.k.a. a nerd), you’d know that from my username.
Amon Hen, I think?
No, it happened before. What’s-his-name died in the Battle of the Sudden Flame (Dagor Bragollach?), which was why Beren was homeless and had to flee to Doriath, where he met Luthien.
I thought Ghan Buri was of the Woses…
The Woses are Druadain, which I misspelled before.
Arien: My humble apologies my fair Lady of the one true trivia. But I don’t actually recognize your name from Middle-Earth. No Elf nor Hobbit I can recall. Is Arien an obscure Human or perhaps Maiar? I suppose this is now trivia Question
34) Who was Arien?
QtM: This strickly from memory stuff his tough, I am used to using a lot of resourses.
Jim
Gotcha. Without my genealogical tables and timeline tables, I can’t fire on all cylinders!
30) What did Hurin cry out every time he slew another orc at Nirnaeth Arnoediad? (English and Elvish, please!)
