Tolkien trivia contest

So I’ve challenged one answer, and duplicated another…

  1. What’s the relationship of Galadriel to Elrond? (fairly easy)

  2. Do Balrogs have wings? (snerk…heehee)

  3. What were the cruel runes written on the Ballhog’s chest?

For 38 we need to flog you with a Balrog’s whip. No subject has caused as much controversy among Tolkien Fans. Don’t you recall the great Flame wars of 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2003. The carnage was epic in proportion.
37: Galadriel is Elrond’s Mother-In-Law and a distant Cousin many times removed.
38: There is no sure answer, I am in the Wing Camp.

  1. Who was Tom’s Mother-In-Law?
  2. Who was Tom’s primary contact in the Shire?
  3. How was Middle-Earth Created?
  1. The Riverwoman
  2. Farmer Maggot
  3. If you mean Arda, the Ainulindale, the song of Eru and the Ainur.

Villanova, my old Alma Mater. Though if Bored had been written during my college days, it would have been Georgetown, instead: Me-Myself-and-Iverson was far more the Ballhog than was Kerry Kittles.

Man, coming up with new questions is hard, without references…

  1. Who once killed a Dunlending with a single punch?

And is Arien’s question about Elf-mortal love still open?

  1. Yes. ::D&R::

FWIW, I’m also in the they-had-'em camp. The LOTR passage about Gandalf’s confrontation with the Balrog in Moria seems pretty clear to me. I’m willing to concede, though, that the wings may be only vestigial, and that a Balrog might not actually be able to fly (otherwise, why would it fall, fall, fall to the bottom of the pit)?

Just my two cents’ worth.

  1. Where was Frodo’s new house (after he moved out of Bag End)?

  2. Who arrived at Frodo’s new house first (and was waiting when Frodo and friends arrived)?

  1. In Buckland.

  2. Fatty Bolger

  1. What is the rocky island in the Anduin near Beorn’s house called?

  2. Which War-of-the-Ring-era Gondorian noble was said to be part elf?

  1. What is the Sindarin name for the inland delta where the Entwash met the Anduin?

  2. What was the Westron name for the same area?

  1. Carrock
  2. Imrahil
  1. Nindalf
  2. Wetwang
  1. Helm Hammerhand
  1. What term did JRRT use for the language of Rohan?
  2. What term did JRRT not use for the language of Rohan?

Ah, this is true, but I was actually thinking the more specific name. (I think it may have been the name of Frodo’s actual property, which was in Buckland).

  1. Crickhollow

Spanish.

Well, technically I guess you’re right. But you’re not the most right. :stuck_out_tongue:

Although I think for (51) you probably mean “Rohirrim” (I believe that’s the name for the people, not the language).

Close, but that’s not it.

Heh…

  1. is Rohirric. Just drop that into casual onboard conversation sometime and watch the good doctor steam from the ears.
