I don’t know Mr. Brady, but I’ve always gotten the impression that he’s an arrogant piece of work. That’s probably not fair of me and I’m wondering if any dopers can give me a better impression of what a good guy he is. He’s a helluva quarterback, yes. I’m asking because I didn’t realize it last night, our house went crazy, we are Eagles fans, but saw this morning that after the game, he didn’t shake hands or offer any congratulations, he went right to the locker room. That seems immature, unprofessional and arrogant to me. Was there a legitimate explanation for his behavior? Is Tom really a humble, decent guy and I just don’t see it?
Basically his fumble killed any hope they had. If I had made a mistake like that in the closing minutes of THE Big Game, I think I would basically slink/sulk off and not shake hands or anything myself. Doesn’t mean his isn’t an asshole ------ it just means I understand that particular behavior.
He is not an asshole at all. My ex-inlaw’s used to be his next door neighbor in Boston and he was as nice and humble as anyone in his position could possibly be. I have never heard anyone that knows him say a bad word about him. He tries to be a good role model for everyone from his teammates to kids. He is extremely competitive and puts a lot of pressure on himself. He was probably just disappointed because he feels like he let people down.
Now, just because he LOOKS like Daniel Tosh…
I get the idea the Super Bowl afterformalities are going to be a bit different from other games. It’s THE big one and the winning team is going to be swarmed with reporters trying to get the first interview with whomever. The flip side to that is, it was the big game and the losers are probably in not much of a mood to chat and analyze the event. Now put yourself in their shoes and magnify how you think you’d feel by a factor of 100 to account for the intense type A personalities that play the game. But come to think of it, I’ve never made it a point to see what the after game chatter is like between SB opponents so I’m just guessing. At any rate, Brady has not been in the news for smacking his girl around or participating in organized dog fighting, and he is conspicuously absent from newspaper articles about general misbehavior. Apparently, they guy just goes home to his family after work and doesn’t involve himself in drunken & womanizing shenanigans so at least as far as other NFLers go he’s a decent enough guy.
I went to U of M at the same time as him and went to many home games where he was the quarterback. I think he had a reputation as being a pretty nice guy.
From everything I gather he is a pretty good guy. As stated, he is never in the news for doing stupid stuff, or being mean, or anything negative. I think he is probably a good husband and father. And probably a pretty swell guy.
My biggest issue with Tom is not even his fault. But the announcers act like he so amazing and mere mortals do not have a chance against him. His win was enevitable and other teams should not even bother to take the field. And when catches are close, they cannot believe that the ruling went the way of the other team. I mean how dare the Eagles or anyone else act like they should have a chance against him.
And it sucks that his coach is such a lightning rod and that the announcers act like they are being paid to fawn over him. It makes others just cringe to hear them talk about how amazing he is.
I feel like his wife must think, “wow, after all the fawning they do, and must make him think he is the second coming, I have to be the one to say ‘Tom did you take out the trash.’”
Anyway, I think the general bad feelings come more from those around him, than whatever he does himself.
That’s nice to hear, the part about him being a nice guy. As far as feeling like he let people down, and of course, he is the quarterback, but, last night my daughter said the announcers make it sound like Brady is the team, like the rest of the guys don’t do a whole lot.
Yes, very good points, indeed!
Yes, I just mentioned how my daughter said even the announcers act like it’s Brady and some 10 other guys out on the field besides him.
Well, his wife did out-earn him until she retired, so she probably didn’t have any problem with that…
It’s not arrogance if you can back it up. If the guy on your high school team thinks he’s the greatest quarterback ever, then he’s arrogant. If Tom Brady thinks he’s the greatest quarterback ever, well, that’s probably pretty realistic.
I feel the same way about Brandy being an arrogant piece of work ! I live in Massauchettes and found it very hard to watch the news b/c Brandy was being talked about most of the time and then there was a realty show about him! Come give me a break stop trying to made a guy a god ! I thinks is sucks that Brandy didn’t give any congratulations to the Eagle and I wanted them to win big time ! So congratulations Eagle on winning the super bowl ! I don’t watch football games but I do watch the news so I am hoping I won’t be seeing that arrogant piece of work on the news so much . It was nice to see the underdogs win .
You should live in Pittsburgh where it really seems like Big Ben is the entire team ---- or Gropey the Quarterback as friends and I lovingly call him. In this place it gets totally nucking futs. But that seems more and more to be the trend throughout the NFL/press especially with the top ten quarterbacks or so. It wasn’t unique to last nights game or the teams; just a trend in modern society to want to identify the whole with one face.
Most players only really hug and shake hands with their friends, guys they went to college with, guys they spend time with in the offseason. Being the only 40 year old player of his status and caliber is probably pretty isolating as far as player relationships. I’m sure his life outside of football more than makes up for it.
Just like A-Rod, Bonds, & Lance Armstrong?
They, too, were among the greatest, but did that little bit extra, that instead of making them the greatest knocked them down a few pegs.
The Cheatriots have been caught twice; how many times were they not caught? How much of his success is because of playing beyond the rules?
Heh, didn’t even think of that. Hard to relate to people 20 years younger, and hard to relate to someone 20 years older. Outside of business I can’t imagine TB would have much to talk about with a 25 year-old 3-4 year “veteran” let alone some flock of egos just out of college.
Patx2:
Is this generally expected behavior after a major sports championship? By way of comparison, I have the pleasure of re-watching the Royals’ 2015 World Series victory on DVD every so often, and after the last out, the Royals were hugging one another on the field, and the Mets pretty much just sat on their bench, sadly or moped their way into the clubhouse. They said all the polite, nice things in post-game interviews, and I don’t recall anyone questioning their professionalism over not giving on-field congratulations to the guys who had just beaten them.
I’ve never heard anyone who knows Brady personally speak ill of him. There’s a semi-documentary on Facebook Watch called Tom vs. Time (probably need a Facebook account) that shows Brady training, at home and on vacation . It’s an amazingly intimate look at his life, and in the comments section are many mentions by people who previously disliked Brady finding they now like him after seeing how he really is. The video is broken up into 5 segments (6th pending) roughly 15 minutes long and I recommend it highly.
It basically Brady and Gronk and 9 replacement players on offense. It was the defense that cost the Pats the game. Brady was brilliant as usual.
But the 2 pairs who are expected to shake after every game are the head coaches and the quarterbacks. This is the first one Brady skipped this year.
