Yeah–I’d think just removing the bracketed note would be good. It’s a bit macabre to see it’s still there because it’s too much work to change it and you think he’s gonna die.
I’m with Idle Thoughts on this one.
Tom is as good as dead.
Let it be.
This is a really strange situation and since it’s so unclear at this moment, I’m going to alter the thread title until some definitive word is announced about Petty’s status.
We’re all emotional today, so let’s step back a little and don’t worry about the little things.
Peace,
Ellen Cherry
Thank you.
I was listening to the “other” news of the day when I heard Julie Mason make the announcement. Wow, quite a shock. RIP(?) Tom
I got turned on to the first album by KSAN when it first came out. I saw The Heartbreakers at Winterland in '77…I remember Tom twirling his Flying V around and around and around at the end of “American Girl”. A great talent, a great songwriter and performer, an American icon.
When I was 19 years old and on my first cruise, just a newbie as a nuke electrician on a nuclear missile submarine (SSBN 633 USS Casimir Pulaski), I was jamming out in the crew’s quarters to the piped entertainment provided by the NavET’s and the electrician I most admired on the boat looked over and said “Man, I thought you’d be into the Bay City Rollers. Not so bad!” So, I got mild acceptance just from diggin’ Tom Petty. I’ve been digging his music ever since. Feels like another family member passing. Feels like he was there for me during all I’ve seen since the first song of his I heard. I kind of hope he felt something similar from his fans. He was loved.
He was loved.
Good bye, Tom.
I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to Tom than his performance of I Won’t Back Down from the Tribute To Heroes telecast following the September 2001 terror attacks.
The BBC is now reporting his death

On Reuters as well.
And TMZ, and an official statement on their facebook page from their manager.
It’s been confirmed by Petty’s manager, Tony Dimitriades, on behalf of his family, so it seems to be accurate this time around.
Goodbye, CD listeners.
We’ve come to the point in this album where those listening on cassette (or record) will have to stand up (or sit down) and turn over the record (or tape). In fairness to those listeners, we’ll now take a few seconds before we begin side two.
Best of luck with Side Two, Tom.
Apparently wiki is convinced now. TOD is listed as 10/2/2017 at 8:40 PM PST.

My favorite, from Long After Dark.
RIP, man. I grew up with your music…it was my soundtrack from my teenage years on.
A slightly ironic death considering his band’s name.
RIP, Tom. You gave me some good times way back when.
I was at this show, live at the Wiltern. The song seems appropriate to me:
I had a ticket to see Petty live last month, but I wound up selling it because I had too much stuff going on that weekend and couldn’t make it. Guess I missed my chance.
Well some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I’ve started out, for God knows where
I guess I’ll know when I get there
Yes, it’s on his official Twitter page. Damn.
I don’t think Petty was ever big in Europe. He certainly wasn’t well-known in Belgium. Apart from the smallish Classic Rock crowd, most people of my age would remember him exclusively as that one-hit wonder from the early 90s.
But I discovered is music when I stayed in Canada, in the Summer of 1989. The girl in whose family I was staying introduced me to Full Moon Fever. I loved it immediately. To this day, I remember our long trips in the Canadian countryside with Runnin’ Down a Dream playing on the car cassette player. When I came back, I played it to my brother and he was hooked, too. He actually became even more of a fan than I was, collecting almost all of his records, which we’d listen to on Saturday nights. Since so few people here knew his music, we felt Petty was one of our secret treasures. Full Moon Fever and Southern Accents are my favourite albums, with Hard Promises not that far behind.
It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down
I had the radio on, I was drivin’
Trees flew by, me and Del were singin’ little Runaway
I was flyin’
What a great song opening. Really paints a picture.
mmm
Last Dance with Mary Jane also had some success.
