Tommorow never knows

My older brother got me a ticket to see The Dead (basically Grateful Dead sans Jerry) along with his wife and daughter. The band loves Beatle covers and I’ve an ear for them.

My brother told me ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ is the only rock song done in one chord – C.

I went to their Columbus, OH show which also included Bob Dylan and Robert Hunter.

No Beatles tunes at this one, but I did get to hear Dylan do “Subterrenian Homesick Blues” (the song that the Weathermen got their name from, among other things). Last fall when they were still calling themselves “The Other Ones,” I went to their Detroit show where they played “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

I attended two Grateful Dead shows where Jerry sang “Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds,” and also heard the Grateful Dead do the Beatles song “Rain.”

I have a tape of the Grateful Dead playing the Who’s “Baba O’Reilly (Teenage Wasteland)” then transitioning into “Tomorrow Never Knows.” It is a pretty interesting song…I remember well the first time I listened to the original John Lennon/Beatles version on the Revolver album.

The Jerry Garcia Band covered “Dear Prudence” at an excellent show I attended in Hartford, about a month after John Lennon’s murder.

The two-disc set Grateful Dead at Fillmore East 2/11/69 includes a first-set closer of “Hey Jude.” It is seriously awful.

I ought to have titled the thread ‘Grateful Dead Live Cover Tunes’ or ‘Is Tomorrow Never Knows the only rock song ever done in one chord – C?’.

That’s what my brother told me. BTW, The two ‘The Dead’ shows at Jones Beach were great. Each night opened with an acoustic set - the first, I think, since Radio City in the early 80’s. Joan Osborne sang the Jerry parts for the tour, and was certainly more and more well received as the tour went on. (There’s still a few more West Coast shows in mid-September)

I’ve seen The Grateful Dead/Garcia Band/The Dead cover these Beatles songs:
blackbird
day tripper
it’s all too much
lucy in the sky with diamonds
rain
revolution
tomorrow never knows
dear prudence

and have heard of them doing:
get back
i want to tell you
i’ve just seen a face
why don’t we do it in the road
strawberry fields forever
hey jude
