Tonight's $1000 Trivia Question

So my weekly trivia team made it to the city finals that were held tonight. 47 teams of 5 people, competing for $1000. We usually do very well at our usual location, so we were pretty confident. After the first 5 rounds (plus a halftime question) we were in a decent 7th place position. Not great, but not terrible. The second half is where it’s at, since the point totals increase. And we did well - extremely well. In fact, we vaulted ourselves into first place. It was still a pretty tight race, and would depend on the final question.

Luckily, the final question on these things is always a “rank these 4 things in this order” format. On numbers alone, you have about a 4% chance of getting that right by just guessing - so if you don’t feel extremely good about it, being at the top usually you’ll bet either 0 or enough to not drop you below 2nd. And with the final question, you can wager points (up to 30). Needless to say, we guessed wrong, and the 2nd place team won. We walked away with $250 - so we don’t feel too bad about the whole thing. Anyway, on to the question - let’s see if you can get it right.

Put the following events in order from oldest to most recent:
Yom Kippur War
Pittsburgh beats Minnesota 16-6 in the Super Bowl
Apocalypse Now is released
Beatlemania debuts on Braodway
1973 Yom Kippur War
1975 Super Bowl IX
1977 Beatlemania
1979 Apocalypse Now

note: you didn’t need to provide the years, they’re just there for reference
I knew the first two and guessed on the second two – I could put them both within a year of their correct answer, but didn’t know which was first.

And congrats! I wish they has something like that around here…they do bar trivia, but all I have to show for it is a stack of gift cards that can’t be used on bar trivia night ( the only night I go there).

The team that won bet the house - all 30 points. They were 7 points behind us. I’m not sure if they were that confident or not - I don’t think we’d have bet more than 6 points though.

Pittsburgh beats Minnesota 16-6 in the Super Bowl
Yom Kippur War
Apocalypse Now is released
Beatlemania debuts on Broadway

You suck exactly as much as my team did - that’s what we went with.

Anyone born around the same time as me (1949) should have a big advantage here;
let’s hope I don’t screw it up.

 1. Beatlemania debuts
 2. Yom Kippur War
 3. Pittsburgh beats Minnesota 16-6 in the Super Bowl
 4. Apocalypse Now is released

This is a bit irritating because although I was wrong on “Beatlemania”
if the name is taken to refer to the Broadway show, I was right if the
name is taken to refer to the social phenomenon associated with the
group, which did debut on Broadway in 1964 (at the studio where the
Ed Sullivan Show was produced) before the other events took place.

I had guessed:

 1. Yom Kippur War
 2. Superbowl
 3. Apocolypse Now
 4. Beatlemania

I had a good idea of the dates for the first three but for some reason I thought Beatlemania came out in 1980. Wrong!

While we lost, we actually loved this question. Like I said, the final question is in the same format - but this is the first time it’s involved such different categories. That’s a good thing - questions like “put these Whoopi Goldberg movies in order” or “rank these states by debt per capita” are pretty specialized.

I was once part of a trivia “team” (our name: Forrest Gimp) who would spend every Friday night at a local bar in Athens GA playing their trivia contest. First prize was $50 in free booze, 2nd was $25, third was $10.

My friends tended to drink with the expectation that they would get, at least, $25. I don’t drink so we would tend to clean up on a weekly basis. We’d do OK on the first half, but would clean up on the 2nd as at least 1/3rd of the team was rock-solid sober.

One night was very close with the final trivia question being “Name the song that contains the following lyric”

Our shadows taller than our souls.

I knew that. Wracked my brain, couldn’t come up with it. I had to step outside, away from the noise and smoke (yes, we were allowed to smoke in bars back then), and with about three seconds left I ran back, scribbled the answer on a piece of paper, and claimed our $50 (we were the only ones to get it right).

Good times.

Stairway to Heaven

Funny how times change. And I don’t mean about the smoking in bars.

You wouldn’t be allowed to step outside in most trivia contests these days while a question was waiting to be answered. Under the presumption that you popped out to goggle the answer on your smart phone.

That’s true - I didn’t even think about that.

I knew the exact years of the Yom Kippur War and Apocalypse Now, but that was all.

Kippur, Beatlemania, Super Bowl, Apocalypse. So I’d have lost too, though I would’ve told the team I didn’t know when Beatlemania was done.

Where on earth do you play trivia for a thousand bucks?! 'Cause I need to get there soon. I had thought that a pot of $150 was giant; clearly I need to get out more.

Like I said, this was the finals. The weekly contests are for $50/$20/$10. But check to see if your city has a league here.

Huh. I’d never heard of this group before. I’ll have to head out tonight and try it. Thanks for the link, Munch.

Sure thing. What city are you located in?

I got all four right. I knew the year of the war. I saw Apocalypse Now when I was a college freshman so that was an easy one for me. I remembered the commercials for Beatlemania when I was in high school. So the only one I wasn’t sure about was the Superbowl as I wasn’t a big football fan when I was young. But I thought I remembered watching that game and I was able to guess right.

Well - did you go? I’m curious if you got the same questions we did. I guess everyone was triviaed out, because only three teams showed up to our location. Hey - guaranteed money! To be fair, one of the regular teams approached us after Sunday night to congratulate us, but to also say goodbye - they were switching locations because they were tired of getting their asses kicked. Their new location is both closer to them and less competitive, so I absolutely don’t blame them.

I’m in Houston, so the only close location started at 9:30 PM. Idea’s great, just didn’t want to be out so late with work the next day. Definitely will take a look at it sometime soon.

The site you linked was a little fuzzy on the cost and logistics. How much is the buy-in? Do you have to go every week?
