Tony Randall dead at 84

I hope this link to Talking Broadway works. It was just announced and I couldn’t find anything on the news websites :frowning: http://www.talkinbroadway.com/allthatchat/display_message.php?id=15353

Damn!
Wasn’t expecting that one.

Yahoo has a short blurb here.

I knew he’d beein in the hospital for awhile. What a loss. He was a great actor.

RIP Tony.

Dang, sorry to hear that because he was an American treasure.

Godammit . . . I want to do a bio of Jayne Mansfield, and he’d have been an important interview . . . [/selflish]

Nice guy, I hear, and terrific light comic actor, too.

There goes the finest trucker who ever lived.

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I met him a few years ago (and his wife, who had just learned she was pregnant) and he was a super-nice individual (which was a surprise- I’d always assumed he’d be pompous). I feel terrible for his children, but at least he left a huge video legacy and had some major quality time with them that they should remember. (Plus, his wife can always marry David Hyde Pierce and it’ll be like having a younger version of Tony around.)

Mickey Hargitay is still alive and selling flowers, and Ann Wedgeworth if she’s sober can still give major info on her younger days.

I am very sad. He was good on stage, in movies, and on TV. A triple threat.

David Hyde Pierce would be great in a movie on Randall’s life.

Come back, Dr. Lao!

I’m sad too. He always seemed so youthful, I thought we (and his kids) would have him well into his 90s.

Well, at least at 5 and 7 his children should be just old enough to keep a few firsthand memories of him.

So was Tony the first person to play a sympathetic gay lead in a TV show? (IIRC, Sidney Shorr was definitely gay in the TV movie, then ambiguously gay in the show, but it was still a major notch above Three’s Company in addressing the gay issue in primetime.)

Actually, answering my own question, I guess Billy Crystal in Soap would be first (and all gay men really wanna be women, don’tcha know, but whatever- I have to admit I thought most of the other plotlines on Soap were hysterical).

RIP. I loved The Odd Couple.

Well, soon their memories of his dodderage will fade, and they’ll know him more by his movies and TV.

(further comments deleted for fear of being called a thread farter.

Ironically enough, he was found in total squalor.

Yes, I saw Jack Lemmon’s performance, but dammit, no one except Tony Randall can ever be Felix Unger.

It’s sad to realize that when Jack Klugman was facing severe health problems a few years ago, it was Tony Randall who helped him out.

And Eve, one more obligatory post:
