On TV late last night, I found out that animal planet has a show that’s basically just footage of kittens: Too Cute! Kittens
There is a part of me that’s like, “I can’t believe this is what they show on TV nowadays.”
but then there is a part of me that’s like “Geez, that is really cute. Especially the persians”.
How far can they take this? It looks to me like so far they have only filmed this one about the three litters but I would not be surprised if it becomes a recurring thing like the Puppy Bowl. Since the show after it was about a woman who is worried she is becoming a “cat lady”, I get the impression that Animal Planet is trying to target the audience of young women cat lovers with this stuff.
Apparently they will be releasing the kitten footage on DVD soon, since there is a pre-order option on Amazon.
See, the Persians ruined it for me. Those extreme brachycephalic faces struck me as kinda grotesque. But, otherwise, yeah. Kinda fascinatingly cute. One sees the blatant manipulation, but keeps watching anyway. I’d never DVR such a thing, but I could easily see flipping channels and getting stuck for 15 minutes - until the Persians ruin it :D.
If you remember the old show Dinosaurs, there was an episode where Earl became a TV programmer. One of his shows was Box of Puppies. Who knew it would turn out to be prophetic?
So keep a lookout for some cable network to run The Happy Colors Show (a test pattern).
That’s too funny; last night I was channel surfing and saw that was on and almost thought about watching it except I was really, really tired. Guess I should have dvr’d it.
Yeah, those flat noses kinda repel me, too. But ugly kittens are like bad pizza - it’s still okay.
I’m not a fan of smooshfaced cats or dogs. But kittens are kittens, and even the smooshfaced kitties still have cute behaviors. It’s not the kittens’ fault that silly humans have bred them for deformities.
I had a medical procedure done yesterday, and the tech was telling me about her SEVEN kittens. It’s all about the butt wiggles before the pounce and the way the kittens get stuck in the curtains and can’t get back down. Being fuzzy and wide eyed helps a lot, too.
On an episode of South Park the kids were trying to do a news show and kept being upstaged by another kid who created a show called Close Ups of Dogs With a Wide Angle Lens. At one point my husband and I looked at each other and said, “We would totally watch this show!”
I love this show–I’ve already watched it three times and I’m desperately in love with Tiny Dancer (the little Abyssinian girl).
Like some other posters, though, I just don’t get the Persian love. On the show they kept referring to them as “kitten royalty” and implying that they were far cuter than the Abys and the Bengals, but I don’t see it. Their faces are smushed, they always seemed to have stuff in their eyes and noses even after baths, and they don’t even look like cats to me. Watching the little Abys and Bengals cavorting around just had me in a puddle on the floor, while the Persian sequences were, “Okay, can I make it to the bathroom or grab a snack before they get back to the cute kittens?”
For those who like Persians, can you explain what’s so cute about them? I love cats, but I genuinely don’t understand this breed’s popularity.
I, too, hate what breeders have done with Persians and Himalayans. Now they look a lot alike and you can’t tell the difference. In this wiki article you can see both normal faced and smooshed faces. I do not understand the desire to breed for traits that lead to medical issues. Eventually, I think their faces will be on the back of their head.
However, they are adorable cute fluffy kittens and the smooshed face and problems associated with them is not as apparent when they’re tiny and I can see how people will be attracted to them. Heck, I would never own a brachycephalic breed of dog* but I admit they make adorable puppies.
*well, maybe if someone gave me one.
I work with animals, I am currently fostering two tiny kittens at home and about 5 more that are a little older and stay at work and I still can’t get enough of watching kittens. I would totally watch that show if I had cable. I wish we could put a tv in our waiting room with that show and the puppy bowl on a perpetual loop to help keep people calm when we are busy.
I’ve watched it twice. I love tiny dancer, but don’t much care for the persians. My favorite, though, is tiny hiccoughing Winston who tries to eat the kitty litter.
It could be worse. Apparently some breeders have decided that cats with deformed, unusable limbs are “cute”.
