She was a Master Costumer, Secretary of the International Costumers Guild, wrote tons of fanfiction and illustrated many fanzines, and she organized fan-based phone banks to raise money for PBS back in the day.
She went into hospice last month, and died this previous Saturday. Her name was Anne Davenport, and I was supposed to visit her this Saturday, but she begged off saying that I needed to recover from going to Worldcon and we rescheduled. I met her through a Doctor Who fan group decades ago, and if people could actually glow she would shine like the sun. We shared many memories over the years, and she was the one that told me I could and should put in a bid to chair Orycon 30.
I hurt, but her pain was greater so I gladly take this tradeoff. Goodbye, Anne.
May her memory be a blessing.
She sounds like she was a quite an interesting person. I’m sorry for your loss.
My sincere condolences to you, Czarcasm. You wrote a lovely tribute, and i love your story.
i don’t know if i’m accurate, but it sounds as if Anne cared about others over the focus on herself, even in her final days. i hope you are able to contribute something about her (a symbol, speech, toast, ritual, etc.), whenever and however you gather with other loved ones to honour her. Deepest sympathies to you and Anne’s family.
I’m very sorry for your loss.
Hold on to those memories; may they comfort you.
Aww. Sorry for your loss, but it sounds like you did say goodbye, just not in person, and yes, her pain ending was a blessing.
My condolences. It’s so hard when people we love pass on.
She sounds like a wonderful person. May her memory be a blessing to you.
I’m sorry that you lost your good friend.
My condolences on the loss of what sounds like a lovely person.
I lost a friend to cancer last year, my first death of that nature, and I was surprised how shocked I was by the death when it finally came. The man had three different types of cancer. We knew he was unlikely to beat them all. But in my head I had more time. In my head I was going to visit soon and tell him how much I cared, and there would be closure for all of us. But then he was just dead. I wonder if it’s always like that. If we always think we have more time.
It’s a chapter I wish had closed differently, so I get how hard that is.
