I went to a memorial service yesterday

My good friend Anne Davenport had a memorial service yesterday, which I attended. In Remembrance: Anne Davenport | International Costumer’s Guild
The memorial was at Somaspace in Portland. She was the person that got me involved in Doctor Who fandom in Portland, made me a TV star (participating in a PBS telethon for Doctor Who way back in the day), convinced me to co-chair an Orycon, convinced me to wear a tearaway Captain Kirk outfit for said opening ceremony skit, talked me into applying for a scholarship for the Kansas City WorldCon ten years ago (which I won) and , most recently, convinced me to go to the Los Angeles Worldcon this year for her because she was dying. I went, and she died a few days later after I gossiped with her right after I got back. She was a Master Costumer and a dear friend and a master mathematician and a Ghod Damn Genius and she was from the second I met her my dear friend. She left me two things at the memorial service: a full length Doctor Who scarf (wool, not nylon) that was the very first thing she ever knitted, and a copy she made of the “Angel” puppet from the series. She said I couldn’t post this until I was equally drunk on whiskey and chocolate…then told me about Chocolate Crown Royal.

The bottle is empty.

The job is completed.

Good bye, My Dear Friend.

Thank you for sharing that, she must have been a remarkable person. I’m sorry for your loss.

To paraphrase the last line of the Remo Williams movie:
“She was better than that.”

I can’t knit but I have done a crochet version of the scarf that looks pretty much the same. I once paid my way to a convention by making quite a few, including some a kid could wear, but using the same colors and proportion of the stripes.

I am sorry for your loss. She sounds like she was a wonderful friend.

She sounds amazing. People who have that large an impact on your life leave such a whole when they are gone, but hopefully the memories will remind you of all the joy.

That was a great tribute. She sounds like a jewel. I’m sorry for your loss.

Condolences to you on the loss of your dear friend. It sounds like you both enjoyed a meaningful and rewarding friendship with each other. Those are rare, and you were both lucky to find each other. I wish you peace.
