Tooth Agony

A couple hours ago, the dentist filled two cavities. Now that the novocaine or lidocaine or whatever has completely worn off, I find myself in considerable pain. It’s hard to describe. It’s worse than when I had my wisdom tooth cut out, but not as bad as when I woke up after when I had surgery on my hand (they had to move some bones). Also, there are these twinges that are very similar in quality to the time I felt a dentist’s drill going in (the novocaine or lidocaine or whatever it was didn’t work that time).

So . . . should I call the dentist back? Ask for a prescription pain killer, perhaps? How long should I wait? Should I find a new dentist (keep in mind, all this pain is just from two fillings, nothing that should really hurt). Or is it normal for the whole side of your face, from jaw to temple, to hurt–maybe I’ve just been lucky with painless dental treatments in the past?

God, I knew I shouldn’t have gone to the dentist . . . from now on I think I’m just gonna let my teeth rot out.

If the cavities that were filled were quite deep it is normal to experiences a strong ache for a couple of days afterwards. For example, needing a painkiller to sleep strong. This pain has always gone away after a few days… As my dentist puts it, the work “woke up” the nerves and they’re not too happy about it.

If the pain doesn’t go away or gets worse after a few days call your dentist and ask about it.

No, call a lawyer
 (Sorry - I forgot you can’t grin anymore!!)

A few advil every couple of hours should cover it (you can take way more per day than the bottle advises). Start with two and use three if that doesn’t take the pain away.
