Top 5 : Horror Movies

Just for fun, in the spirit of the holiday, lets all list our top 5 horror movies EVAR! Use the loosest possible definition of horror. We don’t need to have a stick up our asses about it.

  1. The Resurrected (Best Lovecraft Adaptation EVAR)
  2. Prince of Darkness (1987, Donald Pleasance)
  3. Nightmare on Elmstreet (the first and baddest!)
  4. Brain Damage (Henenlotter, 1988, from the man that gave us Basket Case
  5. The Ring

These are in no particular order, just the top 5 in my book

The Exorcist
A Nightmare on Elm Street (the 1st, of course!)
Halloween
Night of the Living Dead
The Shining

Top most horrorful?

The Exorcist
The Shining
Audition
Salo
Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer

The five movies that most transcend the genre?

The Dawn of the Dead
Assault on Precinct 13
I Walked with a Zombie
The Last House on the Left
The Old Dark House

The five best movies of all films that might be classed as horror?

The Shining
I Walked with a Zombie
Bride of Frankenstein
Audition
Assault on Precinct 13

The five most entertaining horror films?

The Silence of the Lambs
The Old Dark House
Halloween
Suspiria
Alien

The Shining
Poltergeist
Hellraiser
The Thing
Night of the Living Dead

The Exorcist
Halloween
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Night of the Living Dead
The Ring

THE RING was the best one I’ve seen lately.
THE SIXTH SENSE was the other best one I’ve seen lately.
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, just because it’s… great.
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, PART III, because I worked in a mental hospital… working with teenagers… when that movie came out. It’s set in a mental hospital for teenagers.

28 DAYS, the OTHER other best one I’ve seen lately.

Dawn of the Dead
Ring (I liked the Japanese version better, so sue me)
The Exorcist
Alien
Rosemary’s Baby

For one reason or another, most horror movies don’t do anything for me. These five, however, chilled me to the bone:

Jaws
The Thing (John Carpenter version)
The Fly (David Cronenburg version)
The Tenant
Alien

Runners-up:

Frankenstein
The Invisible Man

The Shining

Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

The Wicker Man

Rosemary’s Baby

Don’t Look Now

Psycho (sorry that’s 6)

(The Exorcist just made me laugh!)

In the Mouth of Madness
Night of the Living Dead
The Haunting (Robert Wise version)
Alien
The Thing (Carpenter’s version)

Hmmm, I’ll go out on a limb with:

Vampyr (Dreyer)
Eyes Without a Face (Franju)
Weekend (Godard)
God Told Me To (Cohen)
Se7en (Fincher)

The Haunting (original 1961 version, NOT the remake)
The Exorcisst
Alien
The Shining

tie:
Dracula - The original with Bela Lugosi
Nosferatu - The original silent horror film. Creepy as hell.

The Exorcist
The Exorcist
The Exorcist
The Exorcist
The Exorcist

Night of the Living Dead
Hellraiser
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Nosferatu (I’m torn between the original and the Herzog version, so whichever you prefer)
Bride of Frankenstein

Dressed To Kill - Cuz I like DePalma & Hate Razors
The Omen - For the Soundtrack
Funny Games - Sickening and Revolting
Dawn of the Dead - Social Commentary
Aliens - For the FX

and the winners are, in reverse order;

#5 - The Last House On The Left (prototype for every slasher film of the last 30 years)
#4 - Scream (revitalized horror movies)
#3 - Alien (incredibly suspenseful)
#2 - Evil Dead II (wildly inventive)
#1 - Audtion (scary as hell)

Ring (jap original, the remakes alright, but doesnt come close to how fucked up the ending is)
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
Evil Dead 2
The Exorcist
Day of the Dead

plus loads more, but thats my 5.

lissener, you saw ‘Salo’? I’ve heard about it and will never see it. I mean, there’s sick and then there’s sick !!
‘Men Behind The Sun’ is also waaay off my must see list.

Session 9
The Changeling
The Shining
Psycho
Alien

I also nominate the music from ‘Halloween’ and ‘The Amityville Horror’.

Alien
Night of the Living Dead
Diabolique
Blair Witch Project
Halloween

Runners Up:
Don’t Look Now
Someone’s Watching Me
Nine (or was it Seven, with Brad Pitt?)

Buck, I almost included Funny Games too. Now I’ll be thinking about it all day.
