Top 6@6 Week #26 Supplemental Poll: Post Your 6 Favorite 6 Cake Tracks

Subtitled: Recipe for Cake: Mix 1 part Southern Culture on the Skids with 1 part Bottle Rockets, stir in a dash of King Missile and several controlled substances and bake for 30 minutes

First: The Who’s, What’s, Where’s & Why’s of the Supplemental Poll

In an attempt to squeeze as many bands in the shortest amount of time possible, The Monday 6 @ 6 Poll, is once again featuring a supplemental poll. A couple weeks ago, Ludovic seconded a request that was eaten in the crash a few weeks back and said you can’t not do a “Cake 6@6 Poll” in The Café Society…Here it is. This supplemental poll, like the regularly scheduled ** Beck** thread will be closed and tallied 6 days from today, Monday October 21, 2002 at or about 6PM EDT. Results from both polls will be posted a few minutes later on that same day in Week #27’s regularly scheduled DC5 6 @ 6 Poll.

Second: The Poll & How it Works

It’s simple enough, post your 6 favorite songs by the artist. Personal observations, opinions, liner notes, comments and the like are always welcome but are in no means required.

Third: The Supplemental Poll Artist’s Discography (Reader’s Digest Version)

If your memory of the featured artist isn’t exactly up to speed, here’s a link to the mostly posthumous discography with 30 second cuts of some of track previews when you drill down through the albums: Comfort Eagle Prolonging The Magic Fashion Nugget Motorcade Of Generosity.

Lastly: The Supplemental Poll Artist of the Week

Without further ado, the under-rated: Cake.
Side note to Chris Johnson of WLD, thanks for turning me on to them a while back.

Here are my 6 Cake selections:

  1. I Will Survive
  2. Meanwhile, Rick James
  3. Comfort Eagle
  4. Shadow Standing
  5. Never There
  6. The Distance

So tell us…What are your 6 favorite tracks by Cake?

Thanking you all in advance. Have a great week.

  1. Rock and Roll Lifestyle, just because that’s where most of us first heard them.
  2. Daria, the interplay of the instruments makes the song.
  3. Guitar, for the musical saw.
  4. Satan is My Motor, because it’s been too long since a rock band pledged alliegance to their dark master.
  5. Alpha Beta Parking Lot, for managing to squeeze a product placement into the bittersweet lyrics.
  6. Italian Leather Sofa, for the horn solo and for being the theme song to the best cartoon ever on TV.

Cake is one of those bands I loved…for one cd. I don’t know if their music changed after that, or I did. Oh Well.

  1. You Turn The Screws
  2. It’s Coming Down
  3. Open Book
  4. Friend is a Four Letter Word
  5. The Distance I think this song was inspired by a cartoon short on Liquid Television but I still can’t prove it.
  6. Daria *I heard a set on a radio show right before fashion nugget was released, and instantly feel in love with this song. Who wouldn’t love a song about their favorite cartoon character? you mean it’s not? *:smiley:

(psst… JohnBckWLD - you cut and pasted from last weeks poll. Cake’s album are not mostly posthumous.)

My list:

  1. The Distance - first time I heard Cake… it was odd… I kept waiting for there to be guitars, cuz it sounded like that sort of song, but it just kept on with the whole bass-trumpet combo. Like, really different, you know?

  2. I Will Survive - what a cover!

  3. Frank Sinatra

  4. Never There

  5. Short Skirt, Long Jacket - this gets in for the video alone.

  6. Sheep Go To Heaven

[size=1]Hey, um, not to name-drop or anything, but Cake’s trumpet player is my third cousin (our grandfathers are first cousins). [size]

OK, that aside:

  1. Never There
  2. Hem of Your Garment
  3. Frank Sinatra
  4. Friend Is a Four-Letter Word
  5. You Turn the Screws
  6. Satan Is My Motor

So much for modesty. :smack:

  1. Sheep Go To Heaven
  2. The Distance
  3. Rock & Roll Lifestyle
  4. I Will Survive
  5. Italian Leather Sofa
  6. Nugget

Cake is like Better Than Ezra; No one knows who they are, until you play a song, then it’s “OH yeah…Those guys rock!”

  6. Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps

I’m a Sacramento girl, so I hold Cake very near to my heart. Many a hot summer night was spent watching them play at Plaza park. It’s music from my high school years, when I fell in love for the first time, when I got my first job, when my first tastes of independence was taking light rail down the to Thursday Night Market and Starlight movies, and when Cake played somewhere in town every single night. It was quite a shock some years later when I visited Paris and on the hostel bar television was a Cake music video. Everyone looked at me really funny when I pointed and said “Home! That’s my home!”. Here are my picks, each dripping with nostalgia…

  1. Ain’t No Good

  2. Ruby Sees All

  3. Daria

  4. Stickshifts and Safteybelts

  5. Satan is My Motor

  6. Jesus wrote a Blank Check

Let’s see if I can think up some trivia for you all. The first time they played “Nugget” live, they called it “Sacramento”. Alpha Beta was a supermarket, and you can still visit the Alpha Beta parking lot. Arco Arena is the major sports arena/big concert venue in Sacramento. When they play “Mr. Mastadon Farm” live, it’s traditional to make an “A” and an “O” with your hands to go along with the chorus… There is a backwards message between two of the songs on Motercade (I forget which songs) which comes out to “Don’t forget to breath in”. The name isn’t really about cake the noun that you eat, but rather cake as in something cakeing up. My friend’s sister was asked to play banjo for Cake, but she said no.

Okay, that’s enough for now. I’m so overcome with nostalga for Sacramento (hey, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it…it’s no San Francisco, but it had and still has one of the most creative, cohesive and downright happening music scenes I’ve ever seen) and memories of the good old days when we’d see John McCrea strollin’ around midtown in his fishermans hat, that I don’t think I can write my paper on Soviet Revolutionary Cinema tonight. Darn.

May I change one of my nominations? If I may, I would like to replace Never There with Where Would I Be?.

Thanks.

  1. Sheep Go to Heaven
  2. Short Skirt Long Jacket

  6. Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps - I don’t know if this was on any of their albums, but it was on the soundtrack for “Dream for an Insomniac,” a cheesy, but fun, movie with Ione Skye, Mackenzie Astin and Jennifer Aniston.

It’s on Fashion Nugget. You know, I don’t know another person who has seen that movie
