Oliver’s Army
Watching the Detectives
(I Don’t Want To Go To) Chelsea
I Want You
Welcome to the Working Week
(All The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes

Owww… special mention to Everyday I Write The Book, which could easily replace Red Shoes.

This was difficult because I have been really overexposed to Elvis Costello for my whole life - my dad is a huge fan of his. It’s like picking one childhood memory over another, because these songs are all part of the soundtrack for my life.

But heck, here’s my list.

  1. God’s Comic
  2. Brilliant Mistake
  3. Little Atoms
  4. I Can’t Stand Up (For Falling Down)
  5. Radio, Radio
  6. Alison

I knew hardly anything by Elvis Costello prior to this week, so I decided to do some research and got my hands on all the Elvis I could find.

Here’s what I decided:

  1. Radio, Radio
  2. When I Was Cruel No. 2
  3. Allison
  4. New Amsterdam
  5. Watching the Detectives
  6. (I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea

[li]Watch Your Step (thermalribbon, I was sure I was gonna be the only one to include this one)[/li][li]King Horse[/li][li]Waiting for the End of the World[/li][li]Motel Matches[/li][li]The Loved Ones[/li][li]Human Hands[/li][/list=1]

  1. Veronica

  2. Pump It Up

  3. God’s Comic

  4. God Give Me Strength

  5. Watching the Detectives

  6. (All The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes

6 - Man Out of Time
5 - Mystery Dance
4 - Alison
3 - What’s So Funny bout…
2 - Watching The Detectives
1 - Good Year For The Roses

My favorite lyric, from the last song:
Or the lip-print on a half-filled cup of coffee that you poured and didn’t drink,
But at least you thought you wanted it, that’s so much more than I can say
for me.

Ouch!

I dont think its all that odd that everyone would claim it is difficult to pick the best Costello tunes: this could be because he has written many phenomenal songs, which he has, or it could also be a function of the demographics.

After all, the people that post here are more likely to be die-hard ravenous music fans, which is precisely the sort of people who are more likely to be huge Elvis fans, (as opposed to bands such as BTO, NTTAWWT ;))
