Top 6@6 Poll Week #41: Post Your 6 Fave Cure Tracks PLUS All Of Week #40's Results

Subtitled: 6:15 Tuesday night. The keyboard taps under office lights. And I’m sitting counting all these votes. Tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap. Fire up the iPod, get your CD’s off the shelf or start up your computer’s jukebox program and let’s get to voting.

1st: Last Week (#40’s) Poll Quick Tallies
Previous Week’s Turnout: Lighter than I expected. The fact twenty people voted in Sunshine’s Jim Croce poll is still something I can’t get outta my craw.

Questions, Answers, Issues, Requests & Honorable Mentionsa) Your Comments & Queries:
From jsgoddess: “Have any of the CSN fans heard The Thorns? It’s eerie”
I have. Matthew Sweet and Shawn Mullins. They’re pretty good. Though I hear a little of CSN’s influence in their sound, the harmonies are quite a bit different. As far as ‘Super Groups’ go, they sure are a whole hell of a lot better than Little Village ever was.

From RealityChuck: “You have to understand that, for a long time, I detested Neil Young, mostly because of my college roommate who played him constantly. I really hated his voice. But over the years, I’ve grown to appreciate him a lot"
Ditto. Except in my case, the offending party mixed in a little Pure Prairie League for good measure. Back then, Neil Young was easy to make fun of. I don’t remember the comic, but still remember the line – ‘Just keep me searching for a real voice’.

From thermalribbon & Hugh Jass: “Allright, jeez, Stephen Stills deserves his own poll and I could see how someone could say the Hollies deserve one as well. Manassas is way up there on my all time list” and “I, too, think Stills should have his own poll, but what’r’ya gonna do?
Well, I think the number of respondents (just the 3 of us) sums it up pretty well. As far as the Hollies go, we’ll definitely poll them when we get around to the H bands.

From dbygawdcapn: “I was a snot nosed kid when I first heard (‘When You Dance I Can Really Love’) on the radio and it was a life altering experience for me. I never paid very much attention to music before, but after hearing this song I just knew that music would always be an important aspect of my life from that moment forward. After The Goldrush was the first album I purchased with my own money”
One of the things I love about these polls is reading other people’s liner notes. It’s kinda funny how with some people it’s ‘After the Goldrush’ and with others it’s the ‘We Sold Our Soul For Rock & Roll’ compilation.

b) Tabulation Notes:
From hawthorne: ‘Helpless (MTV Unplugged Version)’ “I don’t think this is cheating JohnBckWLD”
Nope. Definitely not cheating. Off the top of my head, it’s at least the 2nd Unplugged version to be selected – With Clapton’s MTV Unplugged version being the other.

From jsgoddess: “This is embarrassing. Neil Young is one of those artists that I’ve always intended to learn about and then, well, didn’t…
I’ve done a little research and find, even more embarrassingly, that I do know more Neil Young songs. I just didn’t know that I knew them.
You may ignore these for the survey”
I just had a meeting with the accounting staff at The 6@6 Poll corporate offices. Here’s how they decided to tabulate your votes: They included your first 2 selections (Cinnamon Girl & Heart of Gold) and added todd33rpm’s four honorable mentions (One Of These Days, I Am A Child, On The Beach & Don’t Let It Bring You Down) for a total of six. The press release reads as follows: At the risk of offending the gods and goddesses, the staff at the weekly 6@6 polls have deemed jsgoddess’ amended 4 Neil Young selections null and void because of the fact she “knows” them as opposed to ‘really enjoys them’. To round out her selections to an even half-dozen, we opted to include todd33rpm’s four ‘honorably mentioned’ selections. Through his liner notes, Mr. 33rpm has proven to us his admiration and knowledge of Neil Young’s work is more than just a casual knowledge.

c) Future Poll Requests:
From Only Mostly Dead: “Please somebody second me, I know I’m not the only one on these boards (who wants a Ryan Adams poll).
From 5 time champ: Thanks for remembering Atlanta Rhythm Section. ‘Another Man’s Woman’ is one of my all time favorites.
Well, the solution looks obvious to me; Why don’t you both just second on another’s requests? Tell you what, I’ll pencil-in both poll requests alongside the CDB on a week that I’m quite certain will be a breeze to tabulate. Keep an eye on the tentative schedule.

d) This Week #41’s Poll Requests:
The now guest poster gex gex requested this week’s Chemical Brothers poll. In honor of his (her?) spirit & love of electronic music, the Chemical Brothers will run in this week’s Supplemental poll. Whether or not I’ll be the only person posting to it will remain to be seen.

e) A Few Asides:
If you have any suggestions on making any of the 6@6 threads more readable (or less spam-like), please let me know. I discovered a long time ago the posters to these threads have better musical taste than any FM or satellite radio Program Director on this planet. Hopefully, after the ZZ Top poll, sometime next decade, I plan to compile all the votes from the SDMB & post them on the web and in a thread. Then I’ll burn a several volume CD set & send ‘em out to the top voters who helped keep these threads going.

As a regular feature, The Supplemental Poll also includes The “Straight Dope Message (Bill)Board" Top Vote Getters List (So Far). Check it out and see if “Watching the Detectives” will be knocked out of the coveted top position. (I have a feeling it’ll take a while. It will either be Dylan, Van Morrison or Steely Dan if I had to fathom a guess)

The next time there will be an Additional poll is during Jazz Week #46.

**Lastly: Week #41’s Featured Artist Poll **
All you have to do is list your six favorite tracks from this week’s featured artist. If you’d like to add your own liner notes or opinions, please go right ahead – I, for one, love reading them. If you specify a live version, it will be noted, but tallied with the studio version. Cover versions are acceptable. Please try to be as accurate as possible when naming your favorite tracks.
Without further ado…The Cure.

10:15 Saturday Night
A Letter to Elise
Catch
From The Edge of the Deep Green Sea
Last Dance
Plainsong

  1. One Hundred Years
  2. A Forest
  3. Never Enough
  4. A Letter to Elise
  5. Other Voices
  6. Three Imaginary Boys
  1. High
  2. Killing An Arab
  3. Boys Don’t Cry
  4. The Love Cats
  5. Inbetween Days
  6. Just Like Heaven

Play For Today
In Between Days
Why Can’t I Be You
Disintegration
A Forest
From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea
(Of course, if one were to ask me this tomorrow, I’d probably have a completely different list. It’s hard to pick so few songs from a great band with such a large catalog.)

Oh, and seeing as we are currently in “C”, how about a poll for Catherine Wheel?

Gacias.

  1. Doing the Unstuck
  2. Lullaby
  3. Letter to Elise
  4. Six Different Ways
  5. Fascination Street
  6. Let’s Go to Bed
  1. Never Enough
  2. Close to you
  3. Love Cats
  4. Boys don’t cry
  5. Lullaby
  6. Just like Heaven

No offence intended spiralscratch, but I think you’d be hard pressed to find enough people that had even heard of The Catherine Wheel to do a poll.

  1. Boys Don’t Cry
  2. 10:15 Saturday Night
  3. Doing the Unstuck
  4. Just Like Heaven
  5. In-Between Days
  6. Close to Me

And we’re doing a Dead Kennedys poll but no Dead Milkmen? BOGUS!

Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
Just Like Heaven
One Hundred Years
Boys Don’t Cry
The Forest
The Figurehead

In no particular order :

Plainsong
Just like heaven
Like cockatoos
In between days
Why can’t I be you?
Homesick

All I have to say is that Robert Smith’s guitar playing is criminally underated. It’s not always so difficult, but it’s usually surprising and tasteful. I recently read something about how he views the guitar sorta like playing a piano! Beautiful.

  1. Love Cats
  2. Close to Me
  3. Boy’s Don’t Cry
  4. Killing an Arab
  5. Lullaby (see comment on RS guitar playing)
  6. Hot Hot Hot

I know the Catherine Wheel, even have an album by them, but don’t like enough songs by them to feel qualified to post in a poll.

Cure: (in no particular order, too difficult):

Fascination Street
Wrong Number
10:15 Saturday Night
Strange Attraction
Just Like Heaven
Killing An Arab

Primary
That version of The Walk done with a kazoo (anyone know where this is from?)
In Between Days
Close to Me
Boys Don’t Cry
Three Imaginary Boys
[sub]in no particular order[/sub]

And an honorable mention to Desparate Journalist (basically Grinding Halt with reworked lyrics about a shitty review in NME)

Catherine Wheel? Weren’t they the ones that did that song “Black Metallic”? That’s all I can remember of them (if they did that one).

6)Mint Car (acoustic)
5)Never Enough
4)Close to Me
3)Just Like Heaven
2)Caterpillar
1)Closedown

Who says guests have to lurk?

  1. Just Like Heaven
  2. In Between Days
  3. Killing an Arab
  4. Why Can’t I Be You
  5. Fascination Street
  6. Boys Don’t Cry

Just as an academic matter, since it didn’t make my top 6, but would “I’m a Cult Hero” be acceptable as a song? Inquiring minds want to know!

  1. Man Inside My Mouth
  2. Shake Dog Shake
  3. Disintegration
  4. Close to Me
  5. Charlotte Sometimes
  6. A Night Like This

Wow. Not an easy thing to do, picking six tracks from such a catalog. Hey, can we have an Elvis Costello poll?
