Headliner 6@6 Poll #40: Post Your 6 Neil Young Faves PLUS Links To All Past 71 Polls

Subtitled: Fire up the iPod, get your CD’s off the shelf or start up your computer’s jukebox program and let’s get to voting - We got alot of ground to cover.

First: The Who’s, What’s, Where’s & Why’s of the Headliner Poll
In an attempt to squeeze as many bands in the shortest amount of time possible, The Tuesday 6 @ 6 Polls include a Headliner poll. This Neil Young poll, like the featured Crosby Stills Nash (& Young) thread will be closed and tallied 7 days from today, Tuesday September 21, 2004 at or about 6PM EDT. Results from all polls will be posted a few minutes later on that same day in Week #41’s featured Cure 6 @ 6 Poll.

Why you ask? After the ZZ Top poll, sometime this decade, the plan is to compile all the votes from the SDMB & post them in a few threads. Then I’ll burn a several volume CD set & mail ‘em out to the voters who helped keep these threads going.

Second: Links to the 71 artists we’ve already closed polling on
They’re all closed and tallied, so don’t piss anyone off & post to them. If you like to read any of them, here you go…The pile just keeps on growing:
§ John Fogerty / Blue Ridge Rangers § Creedence Clearwater Revival § Commander Cody (And His Lost Planet Airmen) § Crowded House § Counting Crows § Creed § Cracker § Camper Van Beethoven § Alex Chilton / Big Star / Box Tops § Sheryl Crow § Chicago § Jim Croce § Concrete Blond § Cowboy Junkies § Cocteau Twins § Derek & The Dominos § Cream § Eric Clapton § The Clash § Elvis Costello § Collective Soul § Alice Cooper § Cheap Trick § Captain Beefheart (& His Magic Band) § Nick Cave (& The Bad Seeds) § Leonard Cohen § The Cars (Benjamin Orr, Rick Ocasek) § Neko Case / New Pornographers § Canned Heat § J J Cale § Johnny Cash (& The Tennessee Two) § Cab Calloway § Dave Clark Five § The Bonzo (Doo-Dah) Dog Band § Cake § Beck (Hanson) § Jimmy Buffett § Jeff Buckley § The Byrds § Buffalo Springfield § Bush § Kate Bush § Jackson Browne § James Brown § Better Than Ezra § Banarama § David Bowie Boston § Bon Jovi § Blur § Belle & Sebastian § Blue Öyster Cult § Blondie § Blink 182 § Black Sabbath § The Black Crowes § Bjork / Sugarcubes § B-52’s § Chuck Berry § Beastie Boys § Jeff Beck § The Band / Robbie Robertson § The Beach Boys § The Beatles § The Animals § Tori Amos § Alice In Chains § The Allman Brothers § AC/DC § Abba & Aerosmith § 6@6 links.

Contemplating what your 6 favorite Neil Young songs might be difficult–but it only takes a minute to post your selections here. Compare your favorite tracks with other dopers who voted and see all the tracks and how many votes each song got next week after this poll closes.

Third: The Poll & How it Works
It’s simple enough, post your 6 favorite songs by the artist. Personal observations, opinions, liner notes, comments and the like are always welcome but are in no means required. You May include Cover Versions. If you specify a Live version, it will be noted, but tallied together with the studio version of the same title. My only request of you is to please try to be as accurate as possible when naming your favorite tracks. In this Neil Young Poll, please do not include CSNY, Sills & Young, Nash & Young or Buffalo Springfield selections. The Buffalo Springfield poll is already closed and tabulated, the CSNY poll is currently running as a separate featured poll and Stills / Nash side projects are to be placed in Week #40’s Supplemental poll.

Lastly: The Week #40 Headliner Poll Artist of the Week
As I’m quite certain you can see, I’ve blabbered on for far too long already. So, without further ado…Neil Young.

So, do you have 6 faves? Is it possible Neil Young can knock Elvis Costello’s “Watching the Detectives” off the top vote getter position. There’s always that chance. Those answers and much more next week, same Eastern Standard Time, same web address.

Thanking you all in advance I’ll probably see most of you over at the **Crosby Stills Nash (&Young)** or Steven Stills (solo) / Manassas / Stills & Young, Crosby & Nash / David Crosby (solo), Nash & Young / Graham Nash (solo) polls. Have a great week!

One Last Reminder: Tracks by CSN or CSNY get voted on separately: Here: At The Featured Crosby Stills Nash (& Young) Poll. If you’d like to vote for tracks from any of Neil Young’s side projects Like Stills & Young or Nash & Young, those selections get posted at the Nash/Stills/Crosby Solo Tracks Headliner poll. Oh Yeah, one last thing: Any votes for Buffalo Springfield tracks will not be counted: Those songs were tallied in a separate polls.

You have to understand that, for a long time, I detested Neil Young, mostly because of my college roommate who played him constantaly. I really hated his voice. But over the years, I’ve grown to appreciate him a lot.

The Captains picks, now with inane commentary.

  1. A Horse With No Name - Just kidding!

  2. Cortez the Killer - Horses with Spanish names.

  1. Sugar Mountain (the version from Live Rust - I love the charm of sleeping li’l Neil on big amp in the movie, and the brighter key)

  2. Ten Men Workin’ (from This Note’s For You - yeah, it’s a genre exercise, and it’s still damn good)

  3. Star Of Bethlehem (from American Stars 'N Bars - the start of my love affair with Emmylou Harris)

  4. When You Dance, You Can Really Love (the original from After The Gold Rush, just because the piano part SHOULDN’T work, and yet does)

  5. Harvest (title track - the clincher is the muted heartbeat of the bass and piano playing together; it’s not complicated, but it’s wonderfully appropriate)

  6. Ambulance Blues (from On The Beach - broke my heart when my 8-track copy fell apart, and my heart came back last year when they released the CD)

Honorable mention to One Of These Days (from Harvest Moon - for me, this is where this album connects with the original Harvest), I Am A Child (from Buffalo Springfield’s Last Time Around - it’s one of the greatest rock and roll kiss-offs, in this case addressed to Stephen Stills), On The Beach (the sound of Neil “in the ditch”…see liner notes for Decade regarding being “middle of the road” for more), and Don’t Let It Bring You Down (from After The Gold Rush - it’s such a great, moody piece, with the added benefits of number 3 above).

  1. On the Beach (the song)
  2. Heart of Gold
  3. Needle and the Damage done
  4. Southern Pacific
  5. Change your mind
  6. Only love can break your heart

Down by the River (although I like the Roy Buchanan version better)
