I’ve read all the bios and several guys have competitive archery experience. A couple guys have experience with sling shots.
The wider range of weapons experience should help on Top Shot. They make them do everything except throw rocks.
That first article on Athena Lee was misleading. Her bio shows competitive shooting after all. “winning two world IPSC Championship titles on the Philippine Ladies Team” and she was on the American womans team that won a world title in 2008.
I hope they managed to find skilled shooters this season, because only 2 or 3 of the guys were a better shot than me, and I’m not exceptional. They just had some spectacular fails like not being able to hit a 6" plate at 100 yards with an enfield and other such things. They didn’t even seem like skilled amateurs half the time.
I thought it got off to a good start tonight. Shooting the billiard balls was a good test. Especially since the shots were partially blocked by other balls. Add in the unexpected fog/rain and it was some tough shooting. I’m still wondering why the pistol champions screwed this up. This should have been easy pickings for them. Chris T. really let his team down. He didn’t live up to his bio tonight.
I was very impressed by Ashley. He made most of the shots for the blue team. I can see why the guy won a bronze star in Afghanistan. He can make the shots under pressure.
Chris R. (the red team leader) surprised me. His bio isn’t that impressive in competition shooting. But, he did pretty good tonight.
All the shooting seemed a little off. Even at the end, when they shot the targets nominating people for elimination. No One hit the damn target dead center. They were all low. Even Chris T. the “pistol champion”. Part of it, is the lack of practice shots. That was a huge factor in the Civil War challenge. I wish they would at least get two or three practice shots. It’s more interesting to see good shooting than bad.
I don’t think the Asian girl, Athena will be around long. She nearly missed the target in the civil war challenge and I think she missed every billiard ball she shot at too. I’m amazed she wasn’t nominated for elimination.
So long Travis. He was the guy that broke his arm in a bar fight the night before Olympic tryouts. Older & wiser this was supposed to be his shot at redemption. Sorry it didn’t work out. I really wanted Chris T. gone.
This season should be better. They got some bad ass weapons to file. Including the Barrett M82. Holy Crap!!! That is one bad ass rifle. .50 caliber BMG  That thing can shoot an armor piercing round.
The military guys will have a big advantage with this weapon. Ashley probably trained with one before.
I’ve only watched the first third of the episode, but I loved that the first competition (to choose teams) was won by the golf pro and the amatuer hunter over the competition shooters and the military marksmen (and markswomen).
And that breech loader is a tough shot - very unpredictable.
I loved tonights episode. They’ve made it more interesting this season. Exploding targets, Tommy guns, what a great episode. I liked the simulated “live fire” with paintball guns. Trying to run while getting shot at will raise anyones heart rate. Makes it harder to hit a target. It takes discipline to pause and take a couple breaths before shooting.
The military and police shooters did really well. Except for the Navy guy. He missed all his shots and was nominated for elimination. Luckily, the Navy guy was really good with that Tommy gun.
Not surprised to see Athena go. She was terrible. I think the pressure got to her.
The archery challenge tonight was freaking awesome. Two people shot arrows through a one and half inch pipe. I loved the way they set up the targets visually. The arrow goes down this long pipe and then exits & hits a bottle of juice, sugar, or other stuff. that was so cool.
They’ve really done a excellent job redesigning the challenges to make them interesting for tv. Punching holes in paper targets is little like watching golf on tv. Blowing shit up after you hit a target makes some great tv.
I pretty much ignored this at first, as I’m not much for Survivor-type competitions. And the host tries way too hard to be butch all the time. Jeez, lighten up, Francis.
Damned if it hasn’t sucked me in, however. The tommy gun and compound bow challenges were inventive and interesting. I can watch the super slo-mo stuff all night long. Shoot another arrow through a glass jug, please.
This week they used primitive weapons. Throwing hatchets and blow guns.
Not one of my favorites by any means. I’m baffled by the restrictions on practicing. They were given about 15 minutes each. One guy said he had about 15 throws before having to compete.
Since no one one had any experience, they put the target really close. Hardly top shot. I know boy scouts that can throw a hatchet that good.
Next week is trick shots. That’s what I’ve been waiting for. Should be the best episode in the series.
I did LMAO seeing the deputy sheriff using a blow gun. He needs to bring that with him on patrol. I’d love to see some of those crack dealers and muggers reaction to that.
Tonight was really good. I found it interesting to see the guys dangling from ropes and shooting. Just like Mission Impossible.
I loved the elimination challenge. Using a WWII training technique for aircraft gunners was cool. The guys were strapped into the back of a truck and had to shoot clay targets at 20mph. I’d love to give that a try myself. I’ve shot skeet all my life.
What hellhole is this show filmed in? I imagine it is in the California hills somewhere, but that’s gotta be the ugliest place with the nastiest weather in the country. It is always blowing wind of 20+ mph, it’s rarely sunny, and it seems to be right at the rain/snow altitude divider, so the temps are right around freezing. Despite the precipitation, there is almost no vegetation, so I expect it is extremely hot and dry in the summer. I don’t know who in hell would ever want to live there.
P.S. That big Air Force guy is a supreme asshole. I’d put him up as one of the nastiest characters in reality TV history.
George is a jerk. I was briefly behind Ashley, until he started being a jerk, too. That crap he was pulling on Jamie was uncalled for. I couldn’t figure out what Jamie did to tick everyone off, either. They never really stated it. I was also glad when Jay finally went. I found him annoying.
At the moment, I think I’m pulling for Chris Reed. He’s said a few things along the way that make me think he’s a decent guy.
This year’s seems a lot more ‘soap opera’ than last year. Maybe they were coached.
He’s Navy. That’s a strike against him among the other milirary guys.
He wouldn’t tell the other guys exactly what he did in the Navy, and didn’t respond when asked if he was a SEAL. That led a couple of guys o think he was intentionally letting them believe he was a SEAL. I think that was Ashley’s big problem. They decided he was dishonorable. But if you ask me, they were just looking for an excuse to hate the Navy guy.
That was a great end to the competition. I loved the sportsmanship at the end. The guy could have sewn up his spot in the final two. Instead, he gave Chris a chance to tie it up. Then they shot one last time in a tie-breaker. Very classy, and that’s how friends compete.
I’ve liked Chris all season. He’s been the most well rounded marksman in all the competitions. He’s done well with literally any weapon they’ve given him. Including, archery and the primitive weapons. His leadership with his team was excellent.
I liked Gunny too. I was fine with any of the final 4 winning. They all were extremely skilled guys.
congratulations Chris!
I watched the reunion show afterward. Glad to hear they’ve already cast the next season.
I liked the ending, and liked who won. I’m not sure what to think about George’s behavior. Intentionally throwing away a shot at $100,000? That doesn’t seem to be in his character. I suspect he was showboating and got caught, which seems more in character for him. When he missed that plate at 25 feet it was played up as being obviously intentional, but on a previous shot with the pistol he also missed his target by a wide margin.
Also, if really wanted to be sporting, all he had to do was pick a more difficult target and distance. Then he would have had to make a good shot to knock Chris out, or Chris would have had to make a good shot to stay in contention. Instead, he picked the easy shot that he would pick to seal up the win - but missed it, thereby allowing Chris to tie him up easily. Then he claimed that it was all intentional because he didn’t want to win ‘that way’. What way is that? By being two shots ahead of the other guy instead of one? It made no sense. The competition had been completely fair. Even Chris was upset about it - until he beat him. I suspect he thought George was being arrogant as well.
If George did intentionally miss that shot, I think it’s because he assumed that he’d beat Chris on a tie-breaker easily anyway, and that he’d look even cooler winning after giving him a break - it was the equivalent of that runner who was far ahead of the pack and then turned and ran backwards to taunt them - and tripped and lost.
