Top TV Tunes #2-Cartoons

Sigmund the sea monster
and Johnny and Scott are friends…

H.R. Puffnstuff,
who’s your friend when things get rough?
H.R. Puffnstuff…

The Bugaloos, the Bugaloos,
they’re in the air and everywhere…
…oh, the humiliation! My childhood is forever linked with Sid & Marty Kroftt.

Technically, not cartoons. But if they count, I must add:

Marshall, Will and Holly
on a routine expedition…

What’s that? They’re making a movie out of it? With Will Farrel? You must be mistaken…never speak of it again.

They fight
and bite
they fight and fight and bite
fight fight fight, bite bite bite
the Itchy & Scratchy show!

and

they fought
and bit
they fought and fought and bit
fought fought fought bit bit bit
it was the Itchy & Scratchy Show!

Anyone with any interest in this thread must know about an absolutely brilliant CD, Saturday Morning Cartoons’ Greatest Hits. Scroll down to the samples. There’s only one really weak track on the whole disc. Sadly, the best song is the only one with no sample, but the Reverend Horton Heat does the Jonny Quest Theme as a scorched-earth, rockabilly/surf guitar lead.

Marshall, Will & Holly…

OMG! I must have this!

Oh, the shame! HOW could I forget H.R. Puffnstuff?!?! That was my favorite show!! I was thrilled when the DVDs came out! Well, I knew I missed some stuff.

When I first saw the ads for the Land of the Lost movie, I wasn’t too happy they were potentially ruining another of my favorite shows (like that abomination in the 90’s) but it looks like a nice parody and actually seems quite funny. I want to see it now. I always hated Chaka and it looks like they had some real fun with that character. Besides, how could I resist seeing the Sleestaks on the big screen? I wonder if they’ll have Enoch (Enok?) in it?

Spiderman, Spiderman,
Does whatever a spider can
Spins a web, any size,
Catches thieves just like flies
Look Out!
Here comes the Spiderman.

Is he strong?
Listen bud,
He’s got radioactive blood.
Can he swing from a thread
Take a look overhead
Hey, there
There goes the Spiderman.

To him, life is a great big bang up
Whenever there’s a hang up
You’ll find the Spider man
*

I’m disappointed in all of you for not mentioning these:

The Inspector

The Ant and the Aardvark

Dudley Do Right

Super Chicken

*Hercules, hero of song and story.
Hercules, winner of ancient glory.
Fighting for the right,
Fighting with his might,
With the strength of ten, ordinary men.

Hercules, people are safe when near him.
Hercules, only the evil fear him.
Softness in his eyes,
Iron in his thighs,
Virtue in his heart,
Fire in every part,
Of the Mighty Hercules.*

The “Iron in his thighs” line always cracked me up.

I don’t really like that one.
The first one that popped into my head was

Flintstones. Meet the Flintstones.
They’re the modern stone age family.

Geez, I’ve seen Tom Slick and Super Chicken mentioned, but whose show was it, people?

*George, George
George of the Jungle,
Strong as he can be.
(Ahhhhhhhh)
Watch out for that tree.
CRASH! (ooooh!)

George, George,
George of the Jungle,
Lives a life that’s free.
(Ahhhhhhhh)
Watch out for that tree.

When he gets in a scrape,
he makes his escape
with the help of his friend,
an ape named Ape.
Then away he’ll schlep
on his elephant Shep
While Fella and Ursula
Stay in step.

With…George, George
George of the Jungle,
Friend to you and me.
(Ahhhhhhhh)
Watch out for that tree.
Watch out for that
(Ahhhhhhhh)CRASH! (ooooh!)
TREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

George, George
George of the Jungle,
Friend to you and me.*

*Caspar the friendly ghost,
the friendliest ghost we know
Though grownups might look at him with fright
the kiddies all love him so!

He’ll always say “Hello,”
And he’s really glad to meetcha
Wherever he may go
He’s kind to every living creature…*

Many of the Disney toons of the late 80’s/early 90’s had some catchy intros. (Duck Tales, TaleSpin, Darkwing Duck) My favorite of them was:

*Daring duck of mystery,
Champion of right,
Swoops out of the shadows,
Darkwing owns the night.
Somewhere some villain schemes,
But his number’s up.

(3-2-1) Darkwing Duck (When there’s trouble you call DW)
Darkwing Duck (Let’sget dangerous)
Darkwing Duck (Darkwing, Darkwing Duck!)

Cloud of smoke and he appears,
Master of surprise.
Who’s that cunning mind behind
That shadowy disguise?
Nobody knows for sure,
But bad guys are out of luck.

'Cause here comes (Darkwing Duck)
Look out! (When there’s trouble you call DW)
Darkwing Duck (Let’s get dangerous)
Darkwing Duck (Better watch out, you bad boys)
Darkwing Duck!*

with TaleSpin close behind.

I loved singing along to the heroic measures of Star Blazers:

We’re off to outer space
We’re leaving Mother Earth
To save the human race
Our Star Blazers

Raymond Scott’s “Powerhouse” showed up in a lot of WB animated shorts.

If it’s not instantly recogniable, start listening at 1:25.
