Toronto Dopers--where should I stay?

I’m going to Toronto for a few days in September and want to stay at a hotel within walking distance of the Air Canada Centre. Money isn’t really an issue but I don’t want to spend a ton of money. Will $150 American per night get me a decent room?

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.

Most of the hotels close to the ACC are above that rate; you’re staying, after all, in the financial and entertainment district of a huge city.

The Cambridge Suites can go as low as $150 US, though, about 15-20 minutes’ walk from ACC. Also try the Novotel Toronto Centre, which is cheaper than most.

I’d say it depends on how far is “walk-able” to you. There’s a few Days-Inn type places, but they’re a bit further north than the ACC (which is pretty much as far south as you can go without getting wet).

In particular I’m thinking of the Days Inn right next to the old Maple Leaf Gardens. I picked a few random days in September for two people and it came up at $129 (Cdn) per night.

It’s a fair walk, but if you start out early you can eat, hit a few shops and visit the Hockey Hall of Fame on your way down. Maybe cab it back after the game if you’re tired. Also, the subway runs right from the corner by the hotel to Union Station, which is attached to the arena.

Yeah, that’s not really an inexpensive part of town. If it were me, I’d probably stay at the Royal York, but it’s high end and expensive. When some friends of mine who weren’t interested in spending a lot of money were in town, they stayed at the Strathcona

Which they seemed to like fine, and claims to have good value.

I’ve stayed at the Strathcona many times. Perfect for someone on a budget!

There’s also the King Street Holiday Inn, which is generally $160-$190 (Canadian, about $130-$160 USD) a night on weekends. It’s quite new and relatively nice.

And if you have some free time, I’m sure there’s a number of Toronto-area Dopers who’d enjoy having a BOTAT* with you. Especially since they all wimped out on another Dopefest this summer. If you’re interested, let us know the dates you’ll be here (especially since I’ll be trekking back west across the Pacific sometime around then).

I stayed at the *Royal York * several years ago. I thought the service was less than impressive, given the price I was paying.

I’ve stayed that the Stratcona as well and found it to be decent. It was clean and conveniently located.

Royal York is a pretty much across the street. In September, I would expect a regular room to run more than $100 (US) over your budget. It’s nice, but if you’re just looking for a bed…

Huh. I’ve always been pleased with the service at the Royal York, and I have pretty high standards for a luxury hotel. Do you remember whether that was before or after they became a Fairmont? My experience is with the Fairmont incarnation.

I’ll be there from Sept. 15 to Sept. 18–actually, I’m going to the U2 shows on the 16th and 17th–I have general admission tickets so I’ll be camping out in line for most of the visit.

I checked the Strathcona and they’re sold out for those dates. It looks like I’ll be able to get a deal at the Westin for $150/night, with my flight, through Travelocity. The pics of it at least look good. Any info on the Westin?

I’ll check out the Royal York also.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and I’d love to meet some Canadian Dopers, eh, if I can fit it in!

If you mean the Westin Harbour Castle, it’s pretty good and very close to the ACC.

Hmm… actually, looking at their website, it pretty much has to be the Harbour Castle, since you didn’t say “Sheraton” (which is also Starwood Hotels) and I doubt you’re staying at the Prince.

It was in February 2002. I don’t know whether that was pre-Fairmont or post-Fairmont.
