Toshiba Thrive, is a screen replacement available

Hello Everyone,

I was sitting on the couch today and opened up a bag of cookies. That in turn was heard by Gunner the Great Dane. See, cookies are his natural prey… So in his haste to investigate the sounds of cookies he jumped up on the couch knocking my Thrive (I think that’s what it’s called) tablet to the wood floor. Now my trusty tablet has a screen with a cracked, spider-webbed corner and a single fracture diagonally from the upper left corner to the bottom right.

Amazingly, neither the crack or the web can be seen while viewing the screen, you can only see either by looking at the screen from an angle. However, you use your finger to input text and I can feel the long crack everyone I type something.

It appears that the display screen itself isn’t damaged, just the top glass. Can this be repaired? If it can be, can I do it myself or can it be done for a reasonable charge? I hate the cracks, but live my tablet. I’m too cheap to just trash this and buy a replacement, so I guess I’ll get used to it if I have to.

Btw, Gunner the Great Dane was eventually successful at liberating the cookies from their packaging. After rescuing then he chomped them and then resumed his daily routine of sleeping.

I just did a quick Google search and replacement screens are available. Ebay has them for $42, some other internet vendors as high as $140. I wouldn’t mind the $42 to replace it. None really have a description on how to replace it other than double sided tape hooks it on. How difficult our easy is it to replace the glass?

iFixit is a good resource for this kind of thing. I don’t see a guide for the Thrive specifically, but it’s likely to be similar to other tablets.

Unfortunately, this probably isn’t going to be an easy process. Most tablets and smartphones today are essentially glued together, and make it difficult (though not impossible) to do any repairs.
