TotalGym - Is Chuck Norris right?

The TotalGym (www.totalgym.com)

Has anyone used this piece of exercise equipment? You slide on a board & it uses you own body weight to create resistance on the cables you pull with your hands & feet.

A friend of mine has it & I tried it once. Seemed to give a pretty good overall workout.

Anyone else tried it? What did you think?

I bought one used. I think it’s a great piece of equipment, mostly. You can carry it around, it hardly takes up any space, and you can get a real burn.

The drawbacks would be the limits to the amount of resistance that you can get. Assuming you’re a guy, you probably can’t get enough resistance for a rowing motion, unless you’re pretty heavy. Even without working out, I can do about 40 reps of that. The other thing is that you have trouble doing the military press, working the shoulders. For that, you might need a set of dumbells. Of course, with a set of dumbells, you can get a pretty good workout in general.

Also, the stronger you get, the less appropriate it will be for building muscle mass. Your lifting ability will outstrip your increased resistance from greater mass. Personally, if you have the room, I would suggest getting a used steel plate weight-cable gym. Some of them don’t take up much room.
