Totally bizarre laserdisc problem

I plan on getting a DVD recorder soon. One of my first projects is to transfer my laserdisc copies of the original Star Wars Trilogy to DVD (nothing legal, of course). So, I decided to get my Star Wars disc out and play it. I put it in the player and nothing happens. Usually, after the player reads the disc, it displays the number of chapters and total time (not unlike a CD player). Here’s what’s lit up on the display:

The “LD” indicator
The “Track” indicator.
“00” right under the track indicator.
The “Disc” indicator.
The “1/L - 2/R” indicator.

When I hit play, the “Play” symbol flashes, but the disc does not play. So I try side two. Same thing. I get the second disc and put it on side three. Same thing. I then put on side four, which has no information on it other than a screen telling me there’s no info on this side and that I should turn the disc over. THAT WORKS!

I tried several other laserdiscs, including the other two Star Wars discs and they play just fine. Hell, it even played a CDR, for cryin’ out loud!

I took a close look at the discs and there’s no evidence of laser rot. There’s no scratches (I always take excellent care of my discs). I even cleaned the surfaces. Nothing. I could understand if any of the above problems existed, but for all three playable sides to not work? That’s freakin’ bizarre. Especially when you consider the “there’s no info on this side” warning plays.

FTR, the damned thing worked about 2-3 months ago! I have kept the discs inside protective sleeves in the original dust jacket and stored upright along with all my other discs.

I have a friend who has a player and I have emailed him to see if he can check it out on his player.

Any thoughts?

It knew you were thinking of buying a DVD player.

Laser rot is completely undetectable to the eye, so it could still be laser rot. I have many seemingly mint condition, new old stock laserdiscs that are completely rotted.

It just seems odd that all three sides would go bad in 2-3 months.
