Tour da U.P 2010

This is a multi-day supported (they carry your luggage and provide most meals) bicycle tour.

I was e-mailed the brochure today. The website has not yey ben updated.
The route this year is:

Day 1 St Ignace to DeTour Village.
Day 2 Detour Village to Sault St Marie.
Day 3 Rest day in SSM.
Day 4 SSM To Tahquamenon Falls.
Day 5 TF back to St Ignace.

I’m guessing it isn’t possible to bike the bridge in SSM. I’d love to say I’ve biked to Canada (checks wikipedia - yes allowed, but no dedicated lane. speed limit is 30 MPH so not so bad)
Something warm to think about in thses cold days

Sounds like fun!

Hmm. How are they getting from St. Ignace to SSM? I’m hoping it’s not I-75, I’m pretty sure there’s prettier ways to go.

I don’t have the exact route, but Day 1 is along the Lake Huron shore from St Ignace to DeTour Village. Day 2 looks to be along the river and then north.

Sounds like fun! (I think…) I’ve never done a long-distance ride like this. But I’ll find out, as I’m signed up for the DALMAC this year.

I started to do a long ride many years ago (almost 30, now that I think about it). Steve, a buddy of mine, and I were going to ride from Traverse City to Mackinaw City and back in a week. We figured it would take about 2 days travel time. We got just north of Elk Rapids, and he had a flat. We fixed it in a roadside park, and didn’t get out of the park before he had another flat. It started raining, and he fixed that one. We didn’t get out AGAIN before he had a 3rd flat. Turns out he was pinching the tube of his ultra-skinny, ultra-light weight english racing tubes every time he broke down the tire.

By this time, Steve was steaming mad. He was so hot the rain didn’t touch his skin. He’s one of those people with zero tolerance for frustration, so you may be able to picture this little roadside party. I called my dad, who ran my car up to us, and we drove the rest of the way to Mackinaw. Turns out he had the wrong size tubes for the bike. So not only did he keep pinching them, but they were too small for the tires he had. They were over-stretched when inflated to working pressure. A bike shop on the island got him squared away, and the bike was flawless after that. Go figure.

I would love to see one Doper go on this carrying a laptop, while someone from Jackson or Ann Arbor heads up to the Pinckney State Rec. Area at the same time. It would be terrific to see simultaneous posts from Paradise and Hell.

At the same time, Michigan DOT must have no sense of humor. Who else could resist the temptation to name the main road to De Tour appropriately?

I’m more interested in how they award the paving contracts in Pinckney.
