Towns, a Dwarf Fortress-like

I voted for Towns to be greenlit by Steam so I bought it while a couple bucks off. The GUI makes it much more user-friendly than DF and getting your citizens their first meal is easier. No plowing a field and waiting for it to flood, then waiting for the flood to dry up and make mud; just plow and mark the area to be used for whatever. You do need to build a mill to grind flour and a bakery to make the flour edible. A carpentry shop and a mason shop are needed to build the baker’s table and oven, respectively.

I’ve only had this game for three days and already have 15 hours in it. Maybe my town will last longer than two months eventually.

I saw it at a couple games sites but was put off by it still being in beta.

You shouldn’t be. After all, Dwarf Fortress is in alpha.

Looks very interesting! Thanks!

Quite welcome.

I wish there’s a way to get these fools to stop what they’re doing and go eat before they starve to death.

Finally got one town into the third month and had to cancel all building projects to get 'em to eat.

Haven’t yet figured out the passage of time. I just barely made my ovens in time to avoid mass starvation - I only lost two citizens to hunger. Now I’m up to 8 + 4 soldiers!

I think I’m up to 13 & 4. Designate more personal room areas than you have residents and more citizens will move in after a few days.

Slowly outfitting all residents with iron armor & weapons. Been trading mud, flowers, and gels for iron supplies from caravans. A recent caravan even had three anvils and a magic breastplate that we could actually afford.

I was looking at this. It got panned by user reviews on metacritic as being really, really shoddy, and a lot of reviews said that the Steam screen shots were misleading.

This thread gives me some hope, though. Are the characters as dynamic as in Dwarf Fortress (are they affected by the things around them in the same way and so on)?

The game is basically DF with a tileset and GUI so, yeah. No way to give anyone specific orders yet but I did see a mod that at least allows them to be told to go to a specific spot. Haven’t seen anyone go into the equivlaent of a fey mood yet but I haven’t been on any one map for very long. I’m hoping that magic items can be made in-town, particuarly that Spear of Whatever which a caravan was trying to unload for 11K.

One difference here is that, after an area is designated as a tavern, your town also attracts Heroes to investigate the dungeons underneath (you need to mine two levels down). The number of heroes attracted is the square root of the town’s non-Hero population, rounded down.

I don’t see anything misleading about the Steam screenies unless a significant number of people were expecting to see maps with structures already built on them.

Here’s a gameplay video with an earlier version.
