So Canadians don’t like it when they are called Americans and Latin American countries don’t like it when people from the USA don’t call them Americans. I’ll try to be careful but I’ll keep referring to myself as “from California”.

No. I live here. I know lots of people from Tijuana and Mexicali. I have done a lot of consulting work in factories in Mexicali. None of them would be offended.
