Traffic terminology: blocked by a stalled vehicle

We’ve all been there. You’re driving along a major boulevard, and you suddenly find that your lane is blocked by a stalled vehicle, or perhaps because sewer workers had to use the manhole and needed to keep the lane clear. But every time you try to maneuver out of this automotive pickle, you can’t, because the people behind you, who also got stuck, pull out first and whiz by you.

Do you know a name for the people who do this, or what it is that they’re doing? I ask, because once when I was visiting my uncle in Chicago, he used a word for these people, or what it was they were doing, and I don’t remember what it was. I’ve never heard it anywhere else, so by this time you must realize it wasn’t a seven letter word begging with “a”.

I’ve never given this a name. I just refer to it as “a bad break”. It’s hard for the people trailing behind you in this situation to not go around.
