It looks like I’ll have to replace my Tivo unit (It periodically stops and reverts to the Welcome screen, resulting in gaps in anything being recorded). When I install the new unit, is there any way to transfer the shows that I’ve already recorded and saved, from the old unit to the new?
If they are both Series 2’s then yes you can hook them both into your home network (wired or wireless) and transfer shows from Tivo to Tivo, Tivo to PC and PC to TiVo. Series 1 does not support this and last I checked Series 3 wasn’t supporting it yet either.
Have you just tried copying your existing drives to a new drive. There are guides at tivocommunity.com
That’s not a bad idea in general, but I wouldn’t try it if he’s having problems with his existing Tivo. Much of a Linux box’s “personality” resides on the hard drive; you wouldn’t want the new system to pick up the same problems.
I’d do the Tivo -> PC -> Tivo trick, if it lets you. I think the media may be “marked” so that it can only be transferred back to the Tivo that first recorded it.
