That sounds intentional. I know some people who do that: a James names their kid Jason or similar.
Speaking of such, the only name I have common enough to reveal here means “he who grasps the heel.” But in French, as it’s a French variation.
A while back, I made up a “what’s your name in Japanese?” list to parody some of the posts I’d been seeing on facebook that basically turned out made up nonsense. For this list, all the names are actual homophones for Japanese words. A couple of them may be a bit obscure.
Mark (マーク) - smudge or speck
Anna (穴) - hole or anus
Danny (ダニ) - tick or dust mite
Billy (ビリ) - loser, last place
Gary (下痢) - diarrhea
Dave (デブ) - obese
Don (鈍) - dull, stupid
Marie (毬) - burr, clod
Ed (穢土) - feces
Karen (苛斂)- oppression
June (順) - docility, obedience
Nick (肉) - meat
