Trapped Miners

This first hit the news yesterday morning. 9 coal miners are trapped in a coal mine in Pennsylvania. Right now, they’re doing all they can to rescue them and they have heard tapping from the trapped miners, but the mine has flooded and the water’s about 55 degrees. They’re 240 feet below ground, and the space they’re trapped in is about 48 to 52 inches high. (The morning paper just arrived on my doorstep.) They’re bringing in a large drill to try to reach these people, but there are no guarantees.

I don’t know anyone directly involved in this, but the thought of what it must be like is haunting. I don’t usually go asking for prayers or good thoughts, mostly because I wonder about all the people who need them and don’t have someone to ask for them, but in this case, I’ll make an exception.

Who’s remembering there are far worse jobs than mine out there.

Here’s a link to a more local source. The place where this happened is not far from where Flight 993 went down on September 11.

Emergency workers haven’t heard any tapping since mid-day yesterday, and now the drill bit they were using to tunnel in for rescue has broken. I have miners in my family, and this is like my worst nightmare ever. I’ll be thinking of those workers today, and their families, who I don’t envy one bit.
Here’s hoping there’s a happy ending involved.
::fingers crossed::

This is such a horrible story–it was on my mind all day yesterday, and when I woke up this morning and saw that the drill bit had broke, I lost a lot of hope. A lot of us are so, so, lucky, and it’s sad that it takes things like this to realize it. God, what a sad thing to happen. :frowning:
