Travian: New server starting. Doper Alliance shall win the game!

No need to add SDMB to your name, unless you want to.

Too late, though I can’t see that it would matter. I signed up for an account at the strategy message board, too.

If you still have space I’d like to give this a try. Registered as cordylus and submitted a reg request at the forum.

Thanks.

I validated both of you on the forums. You may want to start off by reading the orientation thread.

Just started a new account (under my doper name) and am sending Ellis Dee an IGM.

I just started on Server 6 a little while ago since I had no idea that there was an SDMB alliance on Server 7. My beginner protection is about to wear off in a few days…do you think it’s worth it for me to quit my Server 6 account and start over? Am I going to get slaughtered as soon as I’m unprotected?

As much as I hate to say you are going to be raided constantly, if you aren’t in a large alliance when your protection ends you are going to be raided constantly.

Very much so.

Am I allowed to play on more than one server? Or do I have to delete my server 6 account? I’m morbidly curious about what happens when I lose my protection. The mechanics of building my city are pretty simple, but how do I see enemy troops? Or will I only see them when they raid my village?

You can have accounts on multiple servers at the same time.

To see enemy troops, build scouts (Equites Legati, Pathfinders or Scouts, depending on your tribe) and send them to attack or raid (doesn’t matter which) an enemy village. Be sure to choose “scout defenses” if you want to see the troops they have.

When troops are on the move to attack you, you can’t see the toop totals. You can, however, see where they originated from inside the Rally Point.

You won’t see enemy scouts as they head toward you, but you will see (and kill) them when they land if you have scouts of your own just hanging out. So be sure to have some. Start with 1, then work up to at least 25.

OK, can someone explain to me how combat works?

I was raided for the first time today. By an army with 600 axemen. Nice. Now, of course, all the units I had in my village were killed, including my rat. But according to the battle report, the attackers bounty was 0 in all categories.

Does that mean that he didn’t steal any of my resources? But that doesn’t make sense, since I’ve only got a level 9 cranny which can only protect 1540 resources times 2/3 because the attacker was a Teuton. And I’d swear I had more than 1000 resources. Yet he didn’t take any.

And if 600 unit stacks are wandering around, what can I do about it? Just up my cranny level as high as possible and make sure to spend down my resources as fast as possible every time I see an imminent attack? I can see that defensive units are worthless because the big attackers are going to totally outclass me. But I didn’t seem to have any negative result from the attack except a few defending phalanxes getting killed.

Level 9 will protect 1540 of EACH resource.

Don’t bother with units right now. Cranny yes. Units No.

That’s pretty much what you need to do. Over the next month you will get attacked several times. As long as you don’t let them get ANYTHING (no dead units, no resources) the attacks will stop as you are a waste of their time.

They want dead units because that means experience for their hero, right?

But shouldn’t I build some scouts?

And I’ve got several “dead” villages near me…places that haven’t increased since I started. I assume the people who started them got bored and abandoned the game. Is it worthwhile to try to raid an empty village for resources? How about empty squares with just animals? Or are these guys going to be regularly farmed by the big guys and so their accumulated resources are regularly harvested.

It just seems weird that I can be attacked by 600 axemen and have nothing happen. That’s because he tried to raid me. What’s the risk that one of the big players will try to attack rather than raid? I assume that they mostly want to raid because they want to farm me rather than destroy me, since a burned out enemy village gets them nothing.

Yes

They will die when you get raided. Don’t bother. At least not yet.

Possibly. But you will need to keep your raiding party alive. As you will be attacked again soon by your non-abandoned neighbors, this track requires a larger amount of babysitting by you. In other words, yes, you could build units to raid other villages, but you will have to be dedicated in raiding and dedicated in dodging attacks to make it worth your time and resources.

Absolutely not. You will need a large army to take on “just animals.” Also, the bounty is quite small.

The difference between attack and raid isn’t what you think it is. The short explanation is that in an attack, one side gets wiped out. In a raid, not all units on the losing side necessarily die. For you and a teeny tiny defense, attack and raid are functionally equivalent.

To a certain extent yes. If a large player decides to wipe you out, you will know it (Catapults).

So why aren’t the big players wandering around with catapults wiping out the smaller players? Is it just because the smaller players can potentially supply them with resources, either from farming or as vassals? What would motivate a big player to try to wipe me out?

Oh they are. But wiping you out doesn’t gain a bigger player anything. Generally, you would need to do something to motivate this action. If you annoy them, they will get you. If you look like a threat, they will target you. It’s hard to say what your particular situation is. You could end up next to someone who decides to wipe you out ‘just because.’ Or your neighbors might be nice.

Are you on s7 with the Dopers? If so, your first line of business is to build a level 10 residence (NOT A PALACE!) and build settlers so you can move to a nicer spot near your friends. Big Friends who can protect you!

Nope, I’m on server 6, but I should probably just close this account and move to 7…but I wanted to find out what would happen and to get a practice run before I start on 7.

Is there a way to specify your start location if I move to 7? I understand that if you build a palace that’s your capital, that’s why you tell me to build a residence, so I can build a settler so I can found a new village somewhere. But is my start location random?

You can only specify as far as quadrant; the rest is random. If you wish to join the Dopers, choose the SW quadrant and hope for the best.

Thanks for the advice.

And now I see I’ve got another stack headed my way to arrive in 3 hours. Yay! Now I’ve got to send my last remaining scout out on an adventure before then…

One more question. I had piles of iron sitting around, so I accepted a trade of iron for wheat and my merchant was on his way and the other merchant was also en route. But the last attacker destroyed my marketplace. Will the trade still go through? Will either of us get the shipment, or are we both screwed? I’m quickly rebuilding a marketplace just in case.
