World of Warcraft Straight Dope Guild

Well since SenorBeef hasn’t replied yet about starting a guild I thought I’d start to get things in order myself. Here’s what I have planned so far.

I’m starting some Horde characters on Central Time Server Thunderhorn. This seemed fairest because many of the dopers that expressed interest were in Eastern Time zones. This way they’re only an hour off and I’m two hours off. It’s a ‘normal’ server that way if people want to PVP they can or just ignore it.

The Guild petition costs 1,000 so I’m going attempt to get the money together as fast as possible (unfortunately it’s not my days off so it might take a few days depending) If anyone feels like helping please do so. Also it says you need 9 ‘unique’ signatures so we need to get at least 9 people to join so don’t be shy about asking other friends/family to join if only in name until we get on our feet.

I plan to call it “The Church of Og” or some such. Not because I think it’s clever but it seems to me it would invite a lot of grief having ‘dope’ in our guild name. My other thought was SDMB but that’s pretty bland. If others have a better idea of what to name it or you want to vote on it speak up.

This is the first Online game I’ve played so if more experienced people have advice I’d appreciate it.

Costs 1000? I thought it was like 10 silver or something.

At any rate, I’m on Argent Dawn, so I can’t join up unless you decide to switch servers, but otherwise I’d love to be in a Straight Dope Guild.

I’m in a guild on Sargeras, and it’s lots of fun. It’s nice to always have a few people on the server to help out if you can’t get past something. Plus, I make them all send me cloths and magic items for my tailoring and enchanting skills. Over 100 skill points in each already.

And you’ll make the money for the charter in no time. 10s isn’t that much. The biggest cost in creating a guild is the time it takes to get everyone’s signatures in person. I had to take a bird, a boat, a tram, and walk half way across Azeroth to get the sigs for my group. Plus we’re on a PVP server so I had to watch out for Horde in the contested areas too. Overall it took a good two hours to get to the human and drawf noob areas (my character is a night elf) to get people signed up. It was fun though - I got to see a lot of cool sights along the way. Just make sure you ask where the gryphon (or wyverns in your case) are in the big cities so you can activate the routes to easily get back.

If you want to see something expensive - read about the guild tabards. It costs 10G (10 gold = 100,000 copper if I’m doing the math right) to create the design, and each guild member has to pay 1G to purchase one for themselves. We haven’t saved up for this yet (most of my members are level 15-20). Sounds fun though.

1000, 10 silver same difference.

You could start a new character and use it. I’m having to ditch 4 characters lvls 6-15 to do this fairly. It’s not like you can’t keep your other characters on your other server anyway.

That’s why I’m hoping to get this organized here. Perhaps even have each person simply start 1 orc character so they’re easy to find and sign up.

Maybe–I’m having too much fun with my character right now to spend much time on a new one, though. And I’d like to find a primary guild first.

guild name ideas:

Bloody Fangs
Screaming Death
Creeping Doom
Furious Angry Wrath
Dragon’s Breath
Buncha Hacky Slashy

Having finally gotten a decent computer put together (installing the last driver on it as we speak!), I hope to play WoW as soon as possible.

I’m interested in being part of a SDMB guild, but I do have one question - is this game playable with dial-up? If the lag is too bad, I’ll have to wait until I get DSL, which should be within a month or two.

Possible SDMB Guild Names:
Desciples of Cecil
Legion of the Wise
Destroyers of Ignorance

I’d make a character and come visit, but my guild of 3+ years is on Elune (EST) and Uther (PST).

Still with all the maitenance they’re doing nightly on the servers, I’ve been doing quite a bit of server jumping.

Perhaps until the guild is set up, a /join SDMB channel would be a good way of hooking up on the Thunderhorn server?

Did the beta testing for this not end already?

Yes, the beta is over. It released on the 23rd.
That’s the server that I’m planning on joining anyway (Horde, too). I have a friend playing on it right now. I can’t play until my new computer gets here. Who are your characters, Darkhold? I’m hoping to be playing by the end of the week. I’ll look you up when I get in.

sturmhauke err I was hoping for more connection to the SD for the guild name. Are you thinking of joining? Or helping me start?

I’ve only played it on cable so I don’t know if it’s playable on dial-up. I’ve certainly seen people throwing fits about lag when I was having no problems what-so-ever so I assume they were on dial up. I like your first and last recommendations for guild names.

Right now I’m using a Troll warrior to get the cash together his name is Tamba (I used the random name generator). I figured with his healing abilities he’d be the one with the least downtime. Right now I’m limited to about one hour per day of playing time so I really needed to figure out the best time management character. Strangely I’m liking him so much anyway I might just keep him after I’ve set things up.

That’s a good idea. Anyone that comes on please log into channel SDMB.

I can help you start, I just made a brand new undead mage called Malevond.

more SDMB-like guild names:
Og’s Berzerkers
Burning Dog Legion
Ray’s Death Squad 920

I’d just like you all to know how much I hate you for having WoW. =( I was completely obsessed with the beta but I’m moving, going to visit my dad, and having Christmas all within the next month, placing my WoW purchase somewhere in early to mid-January.

OH, THE HORROR! THE HORROR!

Can someone tame a pet and name it after me so I won’t feel so left out until then?

The Burning Dog Legion is a brilliant name–had I not just joined a guild, I’d be trying to yoink it myself :).

Well two people signed up this morning so we have a start. So far we’ve all chosen different skills (Tailoring, enchanting, Skinning, leatherwork, mining, and blacksmithing) so we’ll have a balanced begining.

The guild has been dubbed Disciples of Cecil because that’s the last suggestion I saw before buying the petition.

I’d strongly encourage all dopers that are interested in joining to go to the server in the mornings so I can sign them up or Fri/Saturday night when I’m not working.

I have the next three days off so I’m hoping that the dopers that expressed interest in playing with other dopers will put their money where there mouth is and at least START a character on Thunderhorn and ask to join the guild.

Anyone that gets on on and signs the petition (or sends me a letter telling me they intend to if they start an undead or Tauren character) I’ll make them any sort of copper weapon/mail they wish. I know it’s not much but it’ll help them get started for their new character.

The tailor of the guild says he’ll be making linen bags for the guild as soon as he can so I’m sure soon we’ll be able to offer bags and higher level items to new joiners.

I’ll be on mostly at night past 10 central time and in the mornings whenever I can be. If you’re on in the evenings leave me a message in the mailbox (The character’s name is Tamba). Or you can email me.

Given that I know little about online games I don’t know if I’m being a little premature over being discouraged that so far I have one signer of the petition and one that will as soon as we can meet (he’s undead and I lost his signature when he deleted the character he used to sign).

So can Alliance join this guild, or is it for Horde characters only?

And I tried running Asheron’s Call 2 awhile back, but my 'puter (a highly problematic kind) wasn’t studly enough in the video display area to run it. Does WoW require the same, more, or less graphic processing capability?

I’m an East Coaster, seriously considering jumping into WoW, but wondering if I gotta upgrade the video card.
