Treasure hunt - help with clues

Hey all, I have been charged with organizing a treasure hunt at my work as a team building exercise. God help me.

Anyway, it will be based on visual clues (paintings, architecture etc) with the answers being words or letters.

Has anyone got any experience doing these, or any talent with writing rhymes or ditties?

I did one of these where the next clue was in a painting in an art gallery. Unfortunately the gallery had a leaky roof and had closed that wing off the day before. Which led to some very confused and angry treasure hunters.

So my one piece of advice would be to quickly walk the route on the day to make sure everything is still accessible.

Btw, I won that hunt because I managed to use google images to find the picture and the clue. So be careful that the clues aren’t too easy to google, otherwise some smartarse like me will just stay in one place and use the internet.

Perhaps the best pictorial treasure hunt ever was Kit Williams’ Masquerade. You could do worse than study that.

This is important, if the people will actually be walking around. I co-chaired a scavenger hunt in downtown Fort Lauderdale a while ago (my intro to charity…pretty cool stuff…). We found that a week before the event, some of the key places had closed or changed signs, and we had to scramble to fix our clues.

If people are going out and about…one fun angle is to have people get pictures of the team in various situations.
A picture of a team with someone wearing a sports shirt from out of town.
A picture of the team in a Porsche. (By pure luck, someone parked a Porche on the road that day, with the windows open. We had several pictures of that car, with people reaching their arms inside)

We did some rhyming clues, and some bad puns. A few things that made a play on stores that were next to each other.
We also had some clues where we provided a picture, and the contestants had to figure out the location. Either answer a question there, or get a picture or specific item.
One other thing we did…it’s not part of the actual treasure hunt, but works for the team building part. The hunt I ran was raising money for Friends of the World Food Program. I wanted to do something local at the same time, so we ran a canned food drive for a local food bank. Collected a ton of stuff…it gives people a great feeling to contribute as a group to something like that.
