So Disney has gone and jazzed up Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island by changing “Island” to “Planet”. Where could they possibly have gotten such an idea???
Anna, a sweet but feisty girl, leaves her evil sorcerer husband Karenin and goes to live in a forest glade with her talking chipmunk, Vronski. Much lighthearted zaniness and tearjerking musical numbers ensue, till Karenin finally falls beneath the wheels of a train, leaving Anna and her furry forest friends to frolic and sing their way into the sunset. Meg Ryan provides the voice of Anna; with Robin Williams as Vronski and Rupert Everett as Karenin.
From a novel called Godspeed by Charles Sheffield. I’ll get you the title later today if you care. It was a damned fun novel as Sheffield was just having serious fun doing Treasure Island in Space as a Heinlein-esque juvie.
They won’t credit him, of course, any more than the credited Zenna Henderson for their obscene swipe of several of her “People” stories for the “Witch Mountain” movies.
I hope Sheffield’s estate* sues Disney’s asses off.
Er. Fenris, Disney didn’t steal the idea from this Sheffield guy. They both stole the idea from Robert Louis Stevenson. And Disney acknowledges that at least.
How hard is it to come up with the idea of “Pirates in Space?”
I have to admit it, this movie looks kinda cool. I’ll probably go see it (and probably be disappointed, too) but hey, there are few enough pirate movies as it is, I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Won’t be cooler than Muppet Treasure Island, but i may still go see this one.
Statler: “Take a cruise,” you said! “See the world,” you said! Now here we are, stuck on the front of this stupid ship! Waldorf: Well, it could be worse. We could be stuck in the audience!
Um, no, the probable basis for Eve’s amusing post was the way Disney feels free to hack away at literature to “Disney-fy” it. Today, Treasure Planet, heck, tomorrow why not Anna Karenina?
When I heard about “Treasure Planet,” my first thought was to recall when the animated show “Gilligan’s Planet” popped up on Saturday morning television.
I just thought I’d point out that Disney has done Treasure Island previously. (a couple of times) As much as I like the muppets I still like the live action version of my childhood. (actually in my childhood it was a re-issue)
