I want to make a batch of party mix to take to the work Christmas shindig this year. You know, the kind that uses Chex, pretzels, peanuts, etc. My grandfather used to make an AWESOME, super-savory one called “nuts and bolts”, but he’s long gone and I never got the recipe. There seem to be hundreds of versions on the internet, but since they call for entire boxes of cereal I don’t want to choose a sucky one.
I’ve always used the basic Chex cereal version, with Goldfish pretzels instead of the pretzel sticks.
IIRC, the original recipe calls for garlic powder and onion powder, but I use Old Bay seasoning on it as it roasts, with real butter instead of Pam or margarine.
I use the one on the back of the Crispix box. I usually add goldfish crackers and use some kind of fun pretzels (alphabets, rings) from our local bulk store. I forget the size of box I buy, but I multiply the recipe by 1.5 to use up the whole box at once.
I use the basic Chex recipe, double the nuts, no bagel chips, and I substitute Crispix when I’m broke. I also do it in the microwave so that it’s done in 15 minutes…once it cools, you’d never know.
I just looked at the Bacon Salt website and saw that the local Winn Dixie stores have it!! I work right next to a Winn Dixie, so tomorrow I’m saltin’ up.
I’ve read several recipes that either call for microwaving or cooking the mix in a crock pot. Sounds like it would make it harder to burn the crap out of it.
