Chex Mix: what could they leave out?

So I’m sitting here nibbling on a bag of regular Chex Mix, mostly because I think the regular Chex part of it is unto food of the gods. Much of the other stuff, not so much. (And I miss the savory peanuts it used to have.)

So which of the items could Chex Mix leave out to make it better, IYHO?

[ul]
[li]Rice Chex[/li][li]Wheat Chex[/li][li]Corn Chex[/li][li]Pretzels[/li][li]Little breadstick things[/li][li]Pumpernickel crisps[/li][/ul]
I used to hate the little bread crisps, but they got rid of the lighter rye ones and made the dark rye/pumpernickel ones crispier. I think I’d get rid of the pretzels, which seem soft and tasteless in that mix. Breadsticks would be a close second.
But I’d really like to be able to buy a bag of just-Chex mix…

IMHO, corn > pretzel > rice > pumpernickel > wheat > breadsticks. The last one has a weird aftertaste. Pumpernickel in moderation.

They’re all coated in that nasty industrial-tasting grease. If they could leave *that *out they’d have a winner.

Melt some marshmallows along with some butter. Mix in Chex, et whatever al. Throw in some Trix. Let cool. Cut into little squares. Leave out the industrial grease.

Make your own and leave out what you don’t want. You might cut back a bit on the seasonings to account for less total stuff.

Is that the same as ‘nuts and bolts’?

This is a hard one. I’m going to say Wheat Chex, because while I went through various phases of picking around various parts of Chex Mix bags, the Wheat Chex were the ones I never ate. I avoided the pretzels and breadsticks some of the time, too, but always the Wheat Chex. It used to drive my mom nuts.

I’m with the OP – I’d love it if they sold Chex Mix that was just the three kinds of Chex. I like pretzels, but they just don’t soak up the flavoring at all, so I’d definitely leave those out. If I want pretzels, I’ll buy a bag of pretzels.

The pumpernickel slices are gross, the breadstick thingies are harmless but boring, and after that I have no complaints.

This is sold. It’s called “Simply Chex”.

I, too, would leave out the pretzels.

When I’ve made my own, I replaced the pretzels with Cheerios.

I love the wheat Chex and the pumpernickel rounds. I’d leave out the pretzels, which are not as yucky as most pretzels but still unnecessary.

The pre-made stuff is too garlicy.

Making your own is easy. I believe during the commercials of Peanuts specials Charlie Brown showed how to make it, and he’s a block-head.

I never cared for the wheat Chexs either. missred reminds me I always used Cheerios too, but I liked extra pretzels. You need the pretzels to make cereal shish kabobs. And also peanuts.

Who would have thought that what your bowl of cereal needed was butter and flavored salts?

We buy the max-pack boxes of Chex (essentially a box of each kind) by the stack around the holidays, mostly because…

…I love Wheat Chex, and it’s ridiculously expensive in the grocery store. The rest of the family eats the Corn and Rice ones and hates the Wheat, so “my” cereal is always there. I guess I could turn some of it into customized Chex-Only mix and I’ve thought about it… but one of the only reasons I eat CM is because the large boxes of tiny bags fill a cost-effective and reasonably healthy snacking niche. I don’t think the home stuff would keep as well.

Heard of it. Never seen it. And if I go looking, I will probably find the chocolate-packed ones again, which were somewhere beyond heroin and unfiltered Camels in the degree of difficulty in breaking the habit. And for those, on the black box label, “Nutrition” is crossed off.

I’ve tried the cheddar flavor that is shown there, and it was pretty good. (I haven’t seen it in my local store for a long time, though.) I’d rather have “Simply Chex” with the traditional Chex Mix seasoning, but I’ve never seen that in stores.

Just make your own and put whatever you want in it, and make it as spicy as you like.

The commercial mix definitely misses the boat by leaving out the Cheerios. When I make it at home I always add Cheerios and stick pretzels and omit the pumpernickel chips. They also use more garlic than we like. I tend to use more Worcestershire sauce instead. Personal taste, as always, but I’d really like the commercial mix better with Cheerios.

I’d leave out the pretzels and pumpernickel crisps because they are just nasty.

I personally hate hard pretzels (soft pretzels are great, hard pretzels are yuck) so I would love it if those were left out.

I would leave out having multiple varieties of Chex. You can’t tell the difference once they’ve been soaked in the butter-Worcestershire mixture and baked back to crispiness.
