Trimming one's eyebrows

At the ripe old age of 29 I’m already getting crazy eyebrows.

Not as in a unibrow, I don’t have that. But my eyebrows typically have 4-5 crazy long hairs that grow twice as long as their neighbors. And they’re always gray. The rest of my eyebrows are much like my hair - I have a lot of hair, but very fine. They grow long and chaotic

My interest was piqued the last time I was waiting to get my hair cut. The guy in front of me was probably ten years older than me, nicely dressed, business professional. Kind of rocking a Don Draper look.

The stylist finished his haircut. He said something (I couldn’t hear it) to the stylist, and she proceeded to take the electric trimmer (with a longish guard, I expect) to his eyebrows.

Two questions:

[li]Is this a normal request?[/li][li]How does one request it?[/li][/ol]

I think it would give me a much neater look, but until I saw the stylist do it to this guy I never even considered that a stylist would do it for you.

The woman who cuts my hair usually offers to do it; it doesn’t take long. I don’t know exactly how to request it, but “would you mind trimming my eyebrows,” would probably do.

Or sometimes I do it myself. I just pull gently on my eyebrows until the longest hairs are standing out from the rest, and carefully cut them down to size with a small pair of scissors.

The things I’m willing to admit to around here.

It’s normal and you can request it from a barber. Don’t known if female stylists do this, but male barbers do it all the time.

You can easily do it yourself with a fine tooth comb and scissors or a clipper. Take the comb and go into your eyebrow hairs with the comb (ie comb them). Holding the comb against your brow lift up the length of eyebrow hair you wish to cut then whack it with the scissor or clippers. Angle the comb so the eyebrow hairs are sticking up through the comb teeth and ready to be cut.

The body of the comb will prevent the scissors or clippers from cutting too close, and cutting off your brow entirely, but will shear off the longer hairs that give you the wild brow look. The comb method protects the initial 1/4 inch or so of brow hairs from being cut which is all you need for neat looking brows.

All of the stylists (all female) I’ve gone to over the past several years have trimmed my eyebrows (I seem to get one or two out of control hairs on each side, with the rest staying normal). Some did it on their own, the others would do it without hesitation when I asked. No problem. Sometimes my wife just does it, though. She gets annoyed by out of control eyebrows before I do.

My husband gets this done on occasion; his (female) hair stylist will take the trimmers and give the brows a trim.

Many women do something similar to their own brows, or have it done by a professional. You take a little brush and brush the brow upwards towards your hairline, trim with a sharp little scissors anything that extends above the brow line (or merely sticks out longer than the other hairs, if your brow is too sparse to shorten it that much), then brush downwards and do the same.

[li]No, normal people want all the eyebrow they can get[/li][li]You say, “Please remove all hope of me looking awesome like a mad scientist; like Brooke Shields; like Bert from Sesame Street. Yes, I truly am a fool and wish to squander my luscious brow!”[/li][/ol]

I knew I was officially old (at the ripe old age of 35) when the barber trimmed my eyebrows and ear hair without asking.

A former coworker of mine curled the ends of his eyebrows into a sort of handlebar mustache style.

I went to SuperCuts and the haircutter asked me if I wanted my eyebrows done. I couldn’t tell if I needed it or it was a sales push. But I said “OK” and she did the eyebrow/guard thing.

The problem I had with it is they shaped it as well as trimmed it. I can see getting rid of the big bushy brows, but I think manicured/shaped eyebrows on men, look too feminine.

As for the gray get some mustache hair color dye. You can use only the amount you need and you can then dye the eyebrows. Be very careful not to get the dye in your eye.

It is not uncommon to ask the hair stylist to trim the eye brows. I have had a few do it without request or ask me if I want it done.

Seems like, now that I live in NY, I see more men with carefully sculpted brows. They look perfectly shaped and waxed. I think that’s definitely preferable to a huge unibrow. (I also see more older men who dye their hair but that’s a whole 'nother conversation)

My husband once had his ears waxed. The barber didn’t exactly tell him what to expect. That was fun for him.

If you want to trim them yourself, just comb them straight up and cut off the parts that straggle beyond the browline.

They always ask me. I have the wild bushy wanna-grow-up-and-become-like-Einstein’s-hairdo eyebrows. I always say no, 'cause I like the mad scientist look.

One of my uses for the scissors on the swiss army classic.

I use my beard trimmer on setting 4.

I cut my own hair and eyebrows (male). I remember barbers/stylists asking if I wanted my brows clipped because I have fast long growing brows.

It helps to have one of those magnifying mirrors handy while sitting at a desk. I use a comb with close tines and either a small curved nail scissors or tiny electric trimmer. The comb is a guide so you don’t cut too much off. Shutting your eyes when you cut helps keep clipping out of your eyes.

For some strange reason, I also have the odd gray hair that shows up. The mirror and scissors aid in simply cutting those short. You could also tweeze them out. I’ve heard people say that kills the hair root. I’d prefer to kill those, but alas it has proved to be a myth in my case. They come back strong as ever.

I have 3-4 wild eyebrow hairs; I just pluck 'em. They don’t show up again for months, it seems.

Tweezers work just great. I sit behind an older gentleman at church, and I wish his barber would talk to him about the crazy ear lobe hairs…I can barely contain myself and have had to make sure I DON’T have tweezers in my purse on Sunday!

And Attack from the 3rd Dimension? Wild eyebrows are never a good look. Never.

Don’t pluck them out. They frequently grow in little clusters of wild curliness, and if you pluck them, eventually those hairs don’t grow back and you have an eyebrow bald spot.

Yup, trim the individual gray/wild hairs shorter so they’re not as noticeable, but don’t pluck them.

I trim mine with the clippers/no. 1 comb that I use on the rest of my head - a couple of swipes across my forehead once the rest of my hair is trimmed and it’s all done.

I use a small handheld trimmer (Philips) with no guard for between brows and my ears, and a pair of tweezers and great determination for nasal hair.
