Triple-decker sandwich?

So I ordered a “triple-decker” club sandwich the other day. A triple-decker sandwich apparently consists of three slices of bread and two layers of sandwich fillings.

Do we call a sandwich with two slices of bread a “double-decker” sandwich? No, I don’t think so. So why does an extra slice of bread suddenly vault the sandwich to triple-decker status?

Sorry, just had to kvetch. The sandwich was delicious. Just . . . just. . . disappointing semantically.

There are open-faced sandwiches, like hot turkey. So I guess a sandwich with two slices of bread is a double-decker.

Still inconsistent, though. A double-decker burger is one with two patties. A Big Mac has three pieces of bread and two patties. Is that a double or a triple? Homer?
