Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

The newest and most irregularly-shaped county is Broomfield, Colorado, formed in 2001. The city of Broomfield sprawled across four counties, all with different court systems and sales tax rates.

The creation of Broomfield County (my brother lives there) moved Jefferson County Airport (“Jeffco” to pilots, and on the radio) out of Jefferson County, which however still owns and operates it. The name still had to be changed, and it is now Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport. It has been the closest airport to downtown Denver since the closing of Stapleton International, which transferred its iconic ICAO code “DEN” to the new Denver International Airport, locally called DIA despite its code.

The county seat of Jefferson County, Ohio is Steubenville. A statue of Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s Secretary of War, stands outside the county courthouse. Stanton was born in Steubenville. President Andrew Johnson’s attempted firing of Stanton is what triggered his 1868 impeachment by the House, although he was later acquitted by the Senate by the margin of a single vote.

Baron von Steuben was a Prussian military officer who assisted Washington in the Revolutionary War. Although Steubenville is pronounced /STOO-bin/, the general’s name was pronounces /SHTOY-ben/ and the Indiana county named after him is pronounced /stoo-BENN/, accented on the last syllable.

Although von Steuben was not actually a baron, he proved invaluable in training the Continental Army. Gen. George Washington at one point during the Revolution asked the Continental Congress to stop naming other foreign volunteers as generals, however, as he did not have enough commands to offer that were worthy of the rank.

Baron Stamp, of Shortlands in the County of Kent, is a peerage title created in the UK in 1938.

Wilfred Carlyle Stamp, the 2nd Baron, holds the record for having held a peerage for the shortest length of time. Both he and his father Josiah Stamp, the 1st Baron, were killed by German bombs on 16 April 1941 during WWII. The common law presumption held that the son had died a fraction of a second after his father, and had therefore succeeded to the title for that short amount of time.

Wilfred Judson is one of four Englishmen who were appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada.

The Supreme Court of the Pitcairn Islands was set up in 2004 to try charges of sexual assault that had been laid against a number of the Pitcairn Islanders. Previously the small population (approximately 50) had meant there had been no need for an extensive formal legal system.

As there was no existing Pitcairn Island judiciary, a court made up of judges from New Zealand was appointed to hear the trials.

The wreck of the HMS Bounty is still visible in Bounty Bay of Pitcairn Island.

William Bligh, commander of HMS Bounty, later became the fourth Governor of the colony of New South Wales. In 1808 he faced another uprising, the Rum Rebellion.

One of Bligh’s descendants, Anna Bligh, is a former Premier of Queensland.

Queensland dominated the Sheffield Shield in the 1990’s, after having won sweet fuck all during the first 100 years.

The Sheffield Shield is the trophy awarded to the champion team in the Australian interstate cricket competition. It was donated by Henry Holroyd, 3rd Earl of Sheffield.

The current holder is NSW.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy is awarded to the NFL championship team winning the Super Bowl. After the trophy is awarded at the Super Bowl, it is sent back to the manufacturer, Tiffany’s to be engraved with the names of the participating teams, the date, location, and the game’s final score. It is then sent back to the winning team for them to keep. Smaller replicas are made for each person on the winning team.

The Stanley Cup is awarded to the National Hockey League champion. The cup keeps growing in size, extended as necessary, as the same original trophy is awarded each year, with the names of the players engraved on it. Each player gets to take it to his home town for a few days to display it. The cup has a few dings in it, from misadventures along the way. It is now 90 cm tall. with 8 added rings.

Winston Churchill firmly believed that Stanley Baldwin’s conciliatory stance toward Adolf Hitler gave the German dictator the impression that Britain would not fight if attacked, and directly led to the outbreak of World War II. “I wish Stanley Baldwin no ill,” Churchill said when declining to send him 80th birthday greetings in 1947, “but it would have been much better had he never lived.”

Baldwin Piano Co. of Cincinnati, once the largest piano manufacturer in the US, is now located in Zhongshan, China and is a subsidiary of Gibson Guitar Corp. It has manufactured instruments under the Baldwin, Chickering, Wurlitzer, Hamilton, and Howard names.

The Yamaha company in Japan brands both motorcycles and grand pianos. There do not appear to be any plans by either Steinway or Harley Davidson to go into competition with each other.

Steinway refers to the products of their competitors as “piano-shaped objects”.

The Bruno is a unit of sound volume equal to that produced by a piano dropped from the roof of MIT’s Baker House on spring-semester drop day. Baker House was designed by Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto, and is his only work in North America.

The last few posts had me wondering if some people were posting in the wrong thread.

Salmo the Baker is an NPC in the video game Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion who is famous for his highly prized sweetrolls and other baked goods. However, due to an oversight by the game developers, it’s not possible for the player to actually purchase anything from him.
